Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Urgh. All the books I own are too long!! But I think I shall read On Chesil Beach, as that's works as I gave it to Fiona for the monthly challenge too.

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments There's one hour to go and I'm looking forward to the toppler.
My audiobook, Brave New World is downloaded. I'm ready!

Enjoy your books, everyone. :) Come up for air periodically and let us know how you're doing?

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Good morning. I’m starting my book. Good reading everyone!

message 59: by Lanelle (new)

Lanelle | 4020 comments I've started listening to my audio book. So far, so good.

message 60: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments I have started my audiobook Room, but I'm limited to commercial breaks and intermissions as the Canadian Juniors are playing the Russian team, and we aren't doing very well :( down 5-0 in the second . . .

message 61: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I'm taking a lunch break so will catch up here. I think I'm going to go read some of the discussion around my book. It's rather a snoozefest.

Jenn, I hope the Canadian Juniors don't get flustered and rally.

message 62: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments Just started my book! I'm a bit late, but we decided to stay at my in-laws for a couple extra days, so I'll have to balance hanging out and listening to my book :)

message 63: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I'm almost halfway through The Traveling Cat Chronicles. It's excellent! How's everyone else doing?

Very mild weather here in Michigan. No snow this holiday season. I'm fine with that! I'm sure we'll have our share of bitter cold and piles of snow soon.

message 64: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments I've made it more than halfway through Louisiana Longshot and I'm enjoying it. I am happy to report that nothing has fallen off or exploded yet. lol It is quite entertaining though. She certainly hasn't been bored there.

message 65: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Good to hear all body parts are safe and sound, Kristie!

message 66: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I finished my book, Brave New World and have reported it. I found it mind-numbingly boring. Sorry to all who loved it. I guess I'm past the age where I find such discussions about what makes for a meaningful life a little superfluous.

Do I want to stay up all night? I think I'll start Moon Called and see where it takes me. I need something fun and fluffy to clear my palate. This will be a reread to refresh my memory so that I can continue the series.

message 67: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments Sorry Brave New World didn’t work for you. It’s one that was on and off my TBR a few times before I finally decided to leave it off. Moon Called should be a good pick me up after that.

message 68: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I'm glad that it's off my to-read shelf. I probably wouldn't have finished it if it wasn't for the toppler. At least I can say I've read it.

message 70: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 1788 comments Just got home from my family's Christmas celebration, and I'm starting Britt-Marie Was Here.

message 71: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Goddammit. my version of on chesil beach is 166 pp.
I've been stuck doing chores all morning. someone's insisting on a catch up this afternoon as we were afterthoughts while people were in town. and my computers broken.

I'll see what I can do, but annoyed I've spent the little time I have had to read on a book that doesn't count. I should have checked

message 72: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments *cough* ... Excuse my little tantrum there

I decided I would just rip out the offending cable in my computer and see what happens. Computer seems to be working, but I got my finger caught in the graphics card's fan.

Finger is fine, but it told me I was being childish.

I think I did the exact same thing last December toppler too regarding page counts.

message 73: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments Haha... oh no, Rusalka! That’s awful and I’d be frustrated too. I almost pulled out the page count, since it has to be off the shelf. I actually had to go check if I left it in. I can see how it could be overlooked when searching on the bookshelf. Will you be able to finish a book?

message 74: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Heh I had to check too. I am really glad i did.

I have checked out the entire ACT Library system, and there's nothing there I can borrow. And gone right through my shelves here again, and managed to find The Illustrated Man. I might be able to knock that out, if our catch up in 45 mins doesn't go to long.

I'll give it a shot anyway :D

message 75: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19130 comments Good luck!!

message 76: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 2553 comments So sorry about your page problem, and your fight with the computer. I just finished Brooklyn, which has been on my shelf for years.

message 77: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4460 comments I was a bit sad that past book discussions are closed - I kinda wanted to go add my 2 cents to the discussion.

message 78: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I’ve been reading off and on today while in and out doing errands. I’m on the last 10% of Ella, Minnow, Pea. It is slow going trying to read the letters now. My brain is converting the words pretty well, but my eyes want to stumble over what is actually written. Not only that, but what is happening is horrible! I never expected anything like this. Such an innocent looking book cover.

message 79: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments I managed to finish a second book. I re-read Moon Called and I'm so glad I did. It was almost like reading it for the first time and I want the background story for continuing the series. The second book is on my trivia challenge list. From what I can remember of my impression of the first read, I enjoyed it more this time around.

I'm stiff from sitting for so many hours, so I'm going to head to bed. The cat is already snoring.

Sorry to hear about your frustrations, Rusalka. Grrr.

message 80: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments Oh no :(
I got really sick yesterday and spent the whole day in the bathroom and I totally forgot about the toppler :(

message 81: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19203 comments Hope you're feeling better Fiona!
There is 6 hours to go if you feel up to joining in.

I'm 50% through my replacement read.

message 82: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments Thanks, Rusalka, I’m better :)
I will try to squeeze in The Hobbit :)

message 83: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Wow, I can finally said that I have read Ella, Minnow, Pea ! That was amazing! And horrible! And brilliant! And funny, at first. And I can’t wait to go read the spoilers in the old thread.

You've got me curious about this one. I've added it to my TBR - list.
I've finished 3 books this weekend. One is for this toppler The Travelling Cat Chronicles

Margo | 11628 comments Oh damn! I lost track of my days and have only just realised that the toppler started yesterday :-O

Sorry Kristie, there are not enough hours left to do it :(

message 88: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments I started the hobbit, but I don’t think I can finish it. I’m only 70 pages in so I won’t be able to read the rest in 2 hours :(

message 89: by Canadian Dragon (new)

Canadian Dragon | 1020 comments I don’t think I am going to get this book read. Not enough hours left

ball-drop

See you next year!

message 92: by Debra (last edited Dec 29, 2019 08:06AM) (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments I've just read all the troubles folks have had this Toppler, from illness, forgetfulness, page-count problems, computer problems, boring reads, etc. As always, life interferes with our good intentions! Hugs all around!

I finished The Travelling Cat Chronicles last night, but was too pooped to get online to report it. Ya'll didn't tell me it is a tearjerker...sniff sniff...sob! It certainly got to my heart. A very endearing read, which I might reread in a few years. It's heartwarming, charming, and lovely. The audiobook is amazing... the cat's voice is purrfect!

message 94: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59851 comments Good morning! Just half an hour left. I surprised myself by finishing two books.

We always seem to have some glitches with our topplers, don't we?

Jayme | 4513 comments Just barely squeaked this one in The Gabriel Hounds. I was worried I wasn't going to finish since we had a holiday party last night.

I got my times wrong, and did yell at Lexx 1.45am here 'STOP TALKING TO ME!! I have 20 pages to read!!!"

Luckily he's reasonably mellow anyway at 1.45am and gets Topplers!

Kristie | 19130 comments Katrisa - The discussions are in our closed discussion area, but if you want to put in your thoughts there the thread should still be available. Otherwise, feel free to add your thoughts here and others may comment too. Just be sure to use spoilers as needed.

Fiona - I'm glad you're feeling better. Were you able to finish The Hobbit?

Almeta - I almost chose The True Story of Hansel and Gretel. What did you think of it?

Way to go, Rusalka! Glad you were able to finish.

Good job, Jayme! Don't let those holiday festivities get in your way. lol

Sorry so many people missed the toppler. The week between Christmas and New Years is a bit like the Bermuda Triangle. Time just seems to get lost here.
