An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena An Unwanted Guest, Shari Lapena. Came out in '18 so I don't think we've read it yet it has a familiar title. Anyway, stash this thread under all our Christmas-ing but do feel free to post any titles for Jan. 2020.

Any story taking place at a snowed in property would be right up my snow bound, ice covered slippery alley.

Oops. NicoleG's already read it.

Another one but it takes place in summer. Maybe save it for later.
As a favor to an old friend, Hercule Poirot finds himself at a summer fete in Devon, taking part not in a Treasure Hunt, but a Murder Hunt, in this never-before-published novella version of Dead Man’s Folly. Now released for the first time as an eBook exclusive publication.

Sir George and Lady Stubbs, the hosts of a village fête, hit upon the novel idea of staging a mock murder mystery. In good faith, Ariadne Oliver, the well known crime writer, agrees to organise their murder hunt. But at the last minute Ariadne calls her friend Hercule Poirot for his expert assistance. Instinctively, she senses that something sinister is about to happen…

In 1954, Agatha Christie wrote this novella with the intention of donating the proceeds to a fund set up to buy stained glass windows for her local church at Churston Ferrers, and she filled the story with references to local places, including her own home of Greenway. But having completed it, she decided instead to expand the story into a full-length novel, Dead Man’s Folly, which was published two years later, and donated a Miss Marple story (Greenshaw’s Folly) to the church fund instead.

Unseen for sixty years, Hercule Poirot and the Greenshore Folly is finally published in this eBook

I have a copy of this in hardcover! My SIL grabbed a hardcover copy for me from Amazon UK last year for Christmas! I'd love to read it at some point with the group!

Has anyone ever listened to Dame Agatha's autobiography? She details how she wrote books based on what she needed money for, e.g. I needed a new roof this year so I knew I'd have to write 2 books. It was clearly a business for her!

I've read Greenshore Folly, and found it very much like the book. I would be fine with reading it. I am also OK with Unwanted Guest, though it sounds a little more of a thriller than I usually read.

I'll try to find some suggestions of my own.

Would love a New Year's themed mystery if we could find one we haven't read but could consider 4:50 to Paddington for first or main portion of Jan. 2020.

Still searching for a fitting title.

Manhattans and Murder, She Wrote is s'pose to be a New Year cozy and then there's The Clock Strikes Twelve. Theme on these would be right. Manhattans & Murder (Murder, She Wrote, #2) by Jessica Fletcher The Clock Strikes Twelve (Miss Silver, #7) by Patricia Wentworth We may have read Clock Strikes as the cover looks familiar.

I am up for Paddington, certainly. A Christie is always a good choice. We did read The Clock Strikes Twelve here a few years ago. And the Jessica Fletcher one is fine with me as well.

Nicole (nicolevickers) | 1814 comments I like both choices, too! And if we go with Paddington we could watch all THREE film adaptations (Margaret Rutherford, Joan Hickson, Geraldine McEwan) lol! ;-)

Thanks for clarity on Clock Strikes, Pghfan. So, I'm good with Christie or Fletcher/MSW. Hmm, some help I am.

I no longer have the Rutherford but believe I've the other two Marple adaptations. If we go this route, I'll probably watch but not read the mysteries and maybe sneak in MSW's Manhattans/Murder on my own.

There is only one copy of Manhattans and Murder in our library system and it is currently unavailable. Rats.

Thanks for tryin', Pghfan. So, Paddington seems a popular pick. PI's, should we go with that?

I'm actually getting a headstart! I watched McEwan yesterday, and starting Hickson today. My old paperback from the 80's is ready to go as well!
