2020 Bookish Goals/Resolutions

I think I set some of my 2019 goals kinda high, so I am going low key for 2020.2020 Reading Goals:
1. Reading Challenge of 250 books.
2. Read 12 books from my book shelves.
3. Read more non-fiction (how is that for a noncommittal?).
4. In my To Read folder, I want to FINISH all books added in 2017 and put a big dent in books added in 2018.
I’m changing things up a bit in 2020!Like the past few years, I want to:
- Read at least 1 classic, 1 Shakespeare, 1 nonfiction, 5 Stephen King books.
- Every year I say I need to attack my to-reread shelf and every year I don’t, so this time I’m setting a specific goal of maybe doing 10 or so? I really want to reread The Lunar Chronicles and Shades of Magic. Probably the Silverwing books too. Not committing to anything else, but I know I’ll reread Howl’s Moving Castle at least once cuz I tend to every year.
- I’m changing how I approach the RYS Challenge. Instead of books I own, I’m going to focus on books on my GR shelf from 2017 or older.
- I’m still only setting a goal for 40 in my reading challenge next year. I have some hefty writing goals for 2020, so I don’t want to put too much pressure on myself.

Your goals essentially mirror my goals. Except read more SW books. lol.

1. Read 12 physical books from my shelves.2. Catch up on my backlog of Audible books. (49 titles)
3. Participate in this year's O.W.L. Readathon (provided it's on again this year)
4. Give myself permission to DNF things I'm not enjoying, because life is too short to turn joys into punishments.
5. Annnnnnd now I've signed up for the Flourish and Blotts Wizarding World Tour challenge (thanks to Kerry for mentioning it because I didn't even know that this was a thing!)
I'm changing up my goals this year. I belong to two groups and would like to be a lot more active in the conversation. I have realized over the past couple of months that I use so much of my Goodreads time just trying to document for all of the challenges that I'm missing out on interacting. So over the next week I'm going to make a list of all of the challenges for both groups and pick 2-3 that I feel are meaningful. I hope this allows me more time to chat about book, life, etc. :)
My goals:1. Read 50 books this year
2. Read at least 5 books that are over 400 pages (there are several of these I've been putting off due to their length!)
3. Read at least 10 books that I already own.
My ARC backlog is akin to the Pacific Ocean Garbage Pile. Consequently, my goals for 2020 are:1. Read fiendishly.
2. Read divergently.
(Asian, African, Latinx, Third World, and LGBTQIA+)
3. READ ARCs!
4. Read ALL BOMC (June '18 - Dec. '19 and continuing!)
5. Read 1Q84 Omnibus (print) and I Am Behind You (print). Both Divergent.
6. Read Vintage SF.
-I joined the ARCAPOCALYPSE group.-
-2020 Around-the-world Terror Trip at Horror Aficionados.-
-Monthly Theme Challenges at Hooked On Books.-
-Monthly Theme Challenges at Devour Your TBR.-
Continuing 2019-2020 Canadian Challenge through June 30. Read #18 of 13.
-and for GR annual: 375.-
Plus:
-Virtual TBR Challenge [KU and Scribd]
-Mount TBR Challenge [NetGalley and Edelweiss ARCs prior to 2020]
-NetGalley/Edelweiss Challenge
Here are a few goals I came up with:1. Read 100 books for my regular Goodreads challenge. I'll probably go over that...
2. Do the ABC challenge again. Preferbaly more than once. I'd like to try it with different categories, like sci-fi or classic books, etc.
3. Do the Popsugar challenge, which I admit I never heard of before!
4. Try to read 30 books off my actual bookshelf.
5. To read a book of 1000 pages or more... I already know which one I want to read.
6. Read more series, like trilogies or longer...I have already started that a bit this month.
That's all I can think of right now.
Oh, my To Be Read list doesn't mean much to me. Why? Because I may not have access to all of the books on it. I more use it as a place to store book titles that I think sound interesting. But I can't read a book if I can't get my hands on it!

That is what mine is for as well! It's less of a To Be Read list and more of a Might Be Interested In list! Which is why I made an exclusive shelf To Read Soon that are my real TBR books.

I also: My GR "to-read" is Enormous, after 8 full years, but so many are "If only I had this" or "I really want to but don't own/not on Scribd."Sarah wrote: "Here are a few goals I came up with:

That's the exact problem I have. I also run into that on group reads often. I would do the group read except it's a book I don't have access to..so I skip the group read. The one time it was for a newly published book too...it was out like only a month or two. But who would want to buy a newer book at probably $20 to $30 to just do a group read? What if you end up hating the book? Plus the bookstore near you probably won't even have that one on the shelf as it's not from a popular author. Plus it takes an hour to get to the bookstore on the bus. So I skip them.
I keep my "big" TBR in a spreadsheet, where I can organize and add notes instead of just looking at a massive list of titles. And this way my GR to-read is much more manageable. So I periodically add books to GR that I want to read in the near future, and only after checking that one of my local libraries has it. If I find myself continually passing over certain titles in favor of more recent additions, I'll make the choice to either give them immediate priority or "demote" them back to the spreadsheet. It's a system that works for me.

Oh that sounds very organized! I've started a spreadsheet for series I want to finish and am still in the process of cataloging that.

My tbr is books I intend to at least try, most of which I can get through Scribd, the library, or the elibrary. I don’t tend to read a lot of recent releases unless it’s a book I bought or I know the library/Scribd is getting it quickly. There’s a bunch I need to request for inter-library loan, where I just need to do it ahead of time. Then there’s a few that are kindle exclusives so I’ll come back to them if I feel ready to buy them as ebook. I also have my audiobook credits on Kobo now so that should help when I have trouble finding audiobooks.
2019 was my first year as part of this great group and I tentatively set out to read 52 books (the # of peaks in Colorado over 14,000 ft). I am blown away - as I just finished #164 last night and there are 2 1/2 more days to the year! THANK YOU to the moderators and thanks to everyone sharing their reads and opinions. I am still working on my reading goal in terms of # and other nuances and will definitely stay committed to the group.
This was my first year since joining the group that I did not reach my goal of 75 books and I am ok with that. This year I became acquainted with audiobooks. I never thought that I would listen to them but, I actually did this year. I felt like if you listened to audiobooks than you were cheating yourself out of connecting with the characters and the plot line of the book. There would be something missing if you weren't actually reading the physical book; I was wrong. With some of the audiobooks(Thrawn series by Timothy Zahn) that I listened to I felt if I actually read the book than I would be missing out on something. I think I will be utilizing the power of audiobooks in the near future.
You know...I just noticed that my book page here on Goodreads does not agree with how many books I've actually read this year?? How can I reach my goal.of 200 books if the page has 2 different numbers? At the top it says I read 197 books but at the bottom it says I read 198! How do I know which is correct?? I know the first "clump" of books is 100 books before you have to hit the "see more" button thingy...but I lost track when I try to count the second clump of books. But why don't the numbers on the page match? Any ideas?
Sarah wrote: "You know...I just noticed that my book page here on Goodreads does not agree with how many books I've actually read this year?? Usually when I add the next book I’ve read it corrects itself. That or sometimes if you give it a day or two. It’s kinda finicky.
Yes,it's on the page where you see all the books that you read in 2019. I tried counting the second group of books and I get 99. So that would be 199 books then. So now I have 3 different numbers of books I read! 😨 I just added a book I read like less than an hour ago..
Someone once told me to sign out to try to correct odd behavior from the website but I don't see where I actually sign out. I usually just close the browser window and when I check messages it asks me to sign in. But I don't see any place to sign out. I checked the tops and bottoms of pages but don't see it.
Ok, thanks! It's silly...I've been on this site since March I think but I didn't know where the sign out button is. Thanks!I counted the rows of books. The first clump of 100 books is 33 rows up and down (count the small sized books). I seem to have 33 rows in the second clump too. So maybe I already read 200 books. I'm going to read a short book here, add it and see if I get another button on my page. If I do I know it's 200 then. 😁
Maybe their count is way off. 😆

I don’t know if you do rereads. The Year in Books tends to only show the picture once for those, even though it counts it. Also check the dates read for the books you’ve finished, I guess.
I didn't do any rereads. But I read another book just now, a short one, and now I got another button to press..so I guess it's 201 books now. I guess I have to check dates...
I am still finalizing all my goals but so far the list is looking like this:
1) read 40000 pages (I set my Goodreads goal for 100 since they don't allow page nubmber)
2) read 25 books I already own
3) read 15 ARCs
4) read 10 books from the 1001 book list
5) listen to 10 audiobooks
6) read 10 graphic novels
7) read 5 books in German
8) read the 2020 pledge books: every year I create a a fairly short list of must-reads
9) I will losely participate in the popsugar reading and the ABC challenges
10) I want to read more Asian, African, Australian, and South American writers
11) I want to make a good dent into my remaining King books
12) I want to read more non-fiction
13) I want to read more poetry

You might've accidentally marked one book as read twice?
You might've accidentally marked one book as read twice?
I'm sticking with my usual reading goals:*Goodreads Challenge - 90 books (I'll be reading a bit more if I complete the next 2 challenges)
*2020 Popsugar Challenge
*2020 Flourish and Blotts Wizarding World Tour Challenge
and adding
*Book Riot's 2020 Read Harder Challenge
I'm really excited about this one. I've been trying to diversify my reading and it will help a lot
I trashed a lot of the books from my TBR shelf by getting rid of the ones I've lost interest in. So my next goal is to
*read 60 books from my new and improved TBR! (most of them will fit into my challenges)
My last goal is to try a new genre. I was thinking of Splatterpunk - I hope my stomach is up for it!

You're welcome! 😉
I decided I want to do the Around the World challenge! I saw it posted somewhere last night. And then I was busy looking at the books I have lying about trying to figure out what countries they are set in and jotting that down on paper! And since I love the Age of Sail, I'm going to do it via sailing ship. That's the medium difficulty apparently..so my books will mainly be visiting countries along the ocean / coast. I want to start out in England as historically that's where a lot of ships moored. Portsmouth..I can't decide if I want to head across the Atlantic first towards the West Indies or should I head towards Africa? Well I'll figure it out. Already have books covering a bunch of countries where I can make port.
According to one website (Wikipedia) splatterpunk is:Splatterpunk was a movement within horror fiction in the 1980s, distinguished by its graphic, often gory, depiction of violence, countercultural alignment and "hyperintensive horror with no limits." The term was coined in 1986 by David J. Schow at the Twelfth World Fantasy Convention in Providence, Rhode Island.
So I guess it's graphic bloody horror...
My 2019 book numbers finally ending up matching. At 201 books. They were goofed up for awhile...maybe it was some delay or the website was super busy at the end of the year? Well whatever it was it fixed itself. 😀

Sarah that happens to be sometimes and it drives me crazy! Sometimes it fixes itself and other times I have to go back through to see if I forgot to put a finished date on a book. Several times a year a lose my mind over this situation..hahah

Or when GR decides to delete a book. Grrr. So annoying and frustrating!

I've also been posting a lot on the Goodreads Librarian group as lately some of the books I'm reading don't have page numbers listed on the site! I swear with the one book it HAD the correct number of pages listed...then I went to update my progress on reading it and after I hit the button to record my progress the page numbers were gone! Stuff like that makes you wonder! But people over there fix it quick. Last book they had to "fix" with page numbers for me was Saturn Rukh.
Annnd I never posted my goals. lol. They're almost exactly the same as last year's because they worked well for me!
📚 Finish series I've started and are done being written: Series to Finish Challenge
In 2019 I completely read or finished over 30 series!
📚 Read as many pre-owned books as possible! Between Read Your Shelves and Mount TBR Challenge.
In 2019, I read 100 books off my shelves (including e-books and audio)!!
📚 And I've also joined the Virtual Mount TBR Challenge this year so I can count and keep track of library books/borrowed books!
📚 Keep up on ARCs with NetGalley ARCs Challenge. Limit ARC requests on NetGalley to only read authors and anticipated books.
In 2019, I read 40 NG books! Which is much better than my 13 in 2018.
📚 Keep up on reviews! Write review next day!
I always backslide during the last quarter. Right now, I have about 25 reviews to write from last year's reads. Eep!

I am so inspired by all of your 2020 goals! These are mine and I am trying to keep them accessible and not too lofty since I have a tendency to beat myself up by not reaching my goals:1) Read 45 (50 is the stretch goal) of my owned and un-read books. I would like 5 of these to be from my Kindle because I probably have 40+ books that I need to read
2) Read my backlog of Book of the Month books and possible cancel it until I do catch up since I have all of 2019 that I have to read (33 books total)
3) Continue to buy less books which I did do but the BOTM subscription I need to work on cancelling or getting one book instead of three though I did skip a month
4) Read 20 books on the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die since it was a goal to read all those books that I fell away from and I want to get back into that
5) The 2020 Read Harder Challenge - I failed at this last year and will conquer it this year
6) The Alphabet Challenge - fourth time is the charm?
7) Have fun
