Carole Mills | 1 comments I'm sorry to be so thick but I don't understand what is required here. I'm not an author so does that exclude me from taking part?

I'm new to the group as you've probably guessed!

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I wasn't an author when I joined! It's a slippery slope!
This is a mixed group. Have a look at the threads and just join in where you fancy. And welcome.

Pete Carter (petecarter) | 522 comments Welcome Carole. As far as I know anyone can join any group on Goodreads. When you join or look in on author groups you'll be disillusioned to find that authors are just your normal everyday crazy people, like everyone else on GR! Be sure to click on the images in messages to find out more about the people you're talking to. (like check out what sort of books they read or write, who keeps elephants and who doesn't, and most important, who eats bacon!) Don't worry, you'll soon learn! Smiley welcoming icon.

You gave me two and I didn't even ask for them. They've cleaned out the fridge, and if I'd paid you, I'd want my money back!

I'd say the entitles you to do whatever you want.

Quite right! No-one's going to pick a fight with an Indian Elephant Blanket.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Carole, welcome! We are a pretty friendly bunch - even the authors! ;-)

There is a lot that you can do on Goodreads, so it can all be a bit confusing. I was a bit puzzled at first. Here's my potted guide (as it appears to me) ...

For me, it's all about books and making friends.

On the book side, you can read other people's reviews about books you have read. You can post your own reviews. After a while you will get into discussions with people about those books - either to agree or disagree.

Sometimes we just chat about any old thing. The good morning thread is brilliant for that. But people will also start a new thread to chat about something that's just happened.

Browse the topics, read what people are saying and leave a comment if you want. Or not.

Every now and again us authors will try to sucker you in to reading our books. Think of that as a bustling market place, say in Marakech. You are wandering along admiring the view and all the while the hawkers at the market stalls are trying to sell you hand-woven carpets, exotic spices and happy baccy.

It's your choice. You can ignore them, squeeze the odd melon or two, or dip in and buy something. No obligation.

I thought I'd got them back! Sorry about that, have a hamper on me to fill the fridge.

I don't understand the 'squeeze the odd melon or two'. Surely you'd get arrested?

But yes - my stories ARE hand woven, exotic and wacky.

Pete Carter (petecarter) | 522 comments Carole! Hello? Are you there? Hello, hello?

Damn, we've scared her off already. I'll never get the hang of this marketing thing.

Anna Faversham (annafaversham) | 1752 comments Hi Carole and welcome. Any time you've got an agonizing problem, then speak up and we'll all try and help or at least say "Ah..."

This group has readers and writers but the writers seem to write more. ;o)

s to do and what you do depends on how much time you have

Yes, welcome. There's lots to do and people to do them with. I'm a half and half myself.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I don't think that means what you think it means.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I think it means two totally different things at the same time.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Schrodinger's llama?

I should think the fact that the thread's been moved may have contributed to the lack of Carole. If you struggle in the place anyway, once someone puts your desperate plea in an appropriate place you're lost for good.
