One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus - January 2020
I've got it right now from the library to read once I finish the books I'm reading now 😂 Super excited to start!
I finished this one, the reviews were so opposite that I just had to know for myself. I feel like this is a thriller for people who are new to thrillers. Maybe, I read too many because I figured the mystery out around Chapter 10. Is this a terrible book? No but its just okay for me. I can't rate a mystery/thriller above three stars if I can figure it all out early on. However, there were things I appreciated it. The romance was actually developed much better than a lot of young adult books so there was that. Overall, I don't hate this book but I don't love it either. A solid MEH.

However,[spoiler?] I don't think the romance was developed that well but it is better than a lot of YA books. I'd give it a 3.5 I'd recommend it as an introduction to YA mystery/thriller.

I have given too many YA books low ratings this year because I couldn't stand the immediate romance with no story to it.

You seem to be well versed in the thriller/mystery genre what book would you recommend?

Just bought my copy, as I read a lot of mystery thrillers. So, I might figure this out early too? We’ll see.
I was on hold at the library, but it looks like the book's price just dropped to 1.99 so I'll definitely read it this month.
I’m 100 pages in. So far, this book reminds me of a similar story I read in high school. It’s good and keeps me engaged, but the story so far is just meh. I agree with another reader. This book is a read for murder mystery beginners.
This book was good (3.75). It kept me interested and I agree the romance was better developed than some YA books. Wasn’t crazy about the ending and several aspects of the book were definitely predictable, but again, not bad.

I'm on chapter 21, and I'm really enjoying it. There is a lot of character development and I love that. I feel like I have read a lot of murder mysteries, and as of right now I do not know how this will end. I am truly enjoying getting to know all of the characters and the potential motives.
Chelsea wrote: "Just got to chapter 22 and I’ve finally become invested in these characters."If her chapters are as short as they were in Two Can Keep a Secret then that isn't too long, but still! That was a long time coming, wow.
I'm going to start this today and hopefully I don't have to wait as long as you in order to get invested in the characters. *teeny bit worried*

OMG! When I finished this book I was so sad that it had ended! One of the best books I have ever read. I would definitely recommend it. Every page was just wow.
Still waiting for my hold at the library. I had planned to start this right after The Starless Sea, but, alas, God had other plans. I noticed the Kindle version is only $1.99, but I'm really trying not to spend money on books this year! Hopefully it arrives soon!

I really enjoyed this, I had a guess who I thought it would be but I was wrong! I can't wait to read the next one when it comes out!

Our library system has very few copies of this, and I'm guessing that since the second book just came out, it's become a hot book for the moment. That's fine though!
I read this a while back and really enjoyed it. I'm not much a YA reader, but this largely avoided some of the YA tropes that tend to take me out of a story. And I'm not someone who tries to figure out the whodunnit, so I was pleasantly surprised by the twists and turns. Has anyone read anything else from this author? I'd definitely give them another read if this what most of their work looks like.
I just finished it, and I loved it! Every night I was excited to read they couldn't wait to see what happened next. I know some disagree, but I love the fact that there were so many potential suspects, that you really didn't know until the end what happened. I thought the character development was amazing and I truly felt like I knew each of them and liked them individually. This is the second book I have read by this author, and I have absolutely loved them both!
Oh wow. I'm excited for those who are reading this book. I really enjoyed this one. And the who dunnit.....hmmmmLooking forward to book 2
I read this book last year and liked it. I get why people don't, but I don't read a lot of mystery/thriller books so for me it was a fun read!
I’m 17% of the way in and fear that I am going to be an outlier on this one - so many great comments in this thread. Hoping my feelings change as I read more.
Hello! Just started reading this book and it’s good so far. I’m almost halfway through and since I liked it so much, I went ahead and bought the second book!
Finished the book late last night. It was a good read. I enjoyed the character development throughout the book. I wrestled with the question "Who did it?" for a little while but I figured it out half way through the book. Don't give up reading if you find it boring because there is a great climax towards the end that brings everything together. Read On!
Finished this one last night and enjoyed it quite a lot. The writing just kept dragging me along in its flow and while I didn't pay too much attention to who did it, or trying to figure it out, it didn't really come as much to a surprise to me either. This is the kind of book where I'm trying just to focus on what the characters are doing, how they're developing rather than trying to figure out who the murderer is. I just enjoy being taken along for the ride.
Nate was my favourite character of the bunch, with Addy a close second, though that took a while.
i liked it a lot. That might be because the Breakfast Club which this seems very much inspired by is one of my favorite movies. I thought the twist was not very surprising but still satisfying.
Finished. This book just probably wasn’t in my sweet spot, and I probably shouldn’t have picked it up. I will say the plot is very unique and a good, unexpected twist happens.
I read this last year and really enjoyed it. I don’t think it’s the best mystery book ever, but it’s very good for YA. The romance and characters are well developed. Some of is predictable but again, for a YA I was impressed. I heard there’s a second book coming out and I’m looking forward to it.
I just finished this one and I can't say I absolutely loved it (the writing style bugged me, I realise those were all teenager POVs but sometimes it seemed too childish) but it was definitely a fun read for a non-mystery-reader that I am. I loved the character dynamics and the mystery slowly unravelling and the plot twist at the end was a good one too. The thing with (view spoiler) Everything came nicely together at the end though.
Lana wrote: "The thing with [spoiler]..."Agreed. I think (view spoiler). It works, but it can feel a little clunky.
I’m almost half way through the book. So far I’m enjoying it. Still not sure who the culprit may be.
I finally got this and read it in just a couple days. I gave it 4/5 stars! I was a little worried because so many people said they figured out the mystery early on, and I kept thinking my theory couldn't be right, so I was looking for any other possible suspects, but I ended up being right! (view spoiler)

I just finished this book. A few twists within the story. I didn’t figure out the who done it but it was a fun read.

The Breakfast Club meets Pretty Little Liars, One of Us Is Lying is the story of what happens when five strangers walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Everyone is a suspect, and everyone has something to hide.
Pay close attention and you might solve this.
On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High's notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention, Simon's dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn't an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he'd planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who's still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.
