Over the last two months, we've been testing out the Points Challenge in the Mini Challenges thread. We're looking to expand it into a group-wide challenge, which will replace the 10,000 books tally next year!

The Points Challenge has a set of points for each book read, and how they relate to the group. This is just another fun way of adding a bit of fun and light hearted competition to the group. Like the 10,000 books right now, we'd have logging threads so you can log how many points you have each month.

POINT SYSTEM
Read a general book: 1 point per book
Read a "shortie" (short story, poem, play): 0.5 points per
Read a group read book: 5 points per book
Read a buddy read book: 5 points per book you read with a buddy
Read a book for the genre challenge: 3 points per book
Read a book for a mini-challenge: 3 points per book
Complete a multi-book mini-challenge: 10 extra points

We ran it through October, and it continued into November with a lot of success.

Ultimately, what we want to know is: Do you want the Points Challenge to be expanded to be a Group-Wide Challenge in 2015? Would you be interested in taking part in it? Please vote in the poll here .

This is the thread to ask any questions, or give us your ideas and recommendations for the challenge. We'd really love this to go ahead, but we understand that it may be more maintenance than people want to.

I didn't join the group until after this started, but it does look interesting. I'd be up for doing it in 2015 :)

message 3: by Cristal (new)

Cristal Punnett I would be interested in taking part in 2015:-)

message 4: by Tracey (new)

Tracey | 916 comments Admittedly, I was skeptical with the challenge at first. I thought it might be overly complicate. But I find it more fun than complicated overall.

One thing I might suggest is to change up the point system every month so that it isn't the same thing over and over. I hardly paid attention to how many points others had, but since it is a "point" challenge, changing up the categories would be a good way to make sure that the same people aren't "winning" each month.

Some fun (or silly) themes I thought of:
-Read a book with the word "the" in the title
-Read a book that is part of a series
-Read a borrowed book (from friend or library)
-Read a banned book
-Read a book from the Boxall 1001+ books reading list
-Read a book that was on your TBR list before last month

(Sorry it took me a while to reply to this)

That's a really intersting idea, Chase, and would definitely add some variation to the challenge! We could have like a 'featured category' like the ones you mentioned!

My only worry that it would lessen opportunities for small mini-challenges like the Banned Book Challenge and other shorter ones (often with only one book).

But I really like the idea. We could have really silly ones like 'Read a book with a red cover', or ones that are simple but add something to it.

Awesome suggestion!

Becca Tyler (scrappybec) | 296 comments I personally am not interested in a points challenge. To much to track.

Thanks for speaking up, Becca. I know you're not alone in this view. I really hope we hear from both sides of the argument.

message 8: by Roseanne (new)

Roseanne | 1239 comments I think it would be fun but I think there is way too much tracking for me.

Any other thoughts on the points challenge?
Melissa just racked up a HELLA load of points for her November reading.

December has the added bonus of points for Readathon sign-up!

I'm kind of lost on how this one works, but I'm up for trying it :D I'm having so much fun putting together my 2015 challenge/tracking thread, can't wait until January 1, 2015!

S. J. -
Check out the Mini- Challenge folder. Some of us are "piloting" the points challenge there. You can see what was done in October and November for ideas on how you would track your points each month next year.

Will do, thanks!

Cheryl Schneider (cltschneider) | 76 comments I personally have no interest...but I think that's okay :) If there are people who WANT to spend the time doing it, let them have it. I'll be happy to cheer on their success!

message 15: by Alessandra (new)

Alessandra (chibisuke) | 266 comments I enjoyed the point challenge in the beginning, but lately I find myself rather unmotivated to actually do it. Maybe 'cause I'm reading slower than others and seen everyone's points makes me feel like I'm the slowest reader ever =/ I don't mind doing this as our group challenge though. Maybe I can overcome that Feeling thanks to it being a group thing.

message 16: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Alessandra - I really appreciate your feedback on the points challenge. The great thing about this stretching across the year is that we will all have some months that are better than others for books read. We have a wide variety of reading "appetites" within the group, which is why we didn't want this to be a competition between members. The point challenge is more about finding ways to read new books and challenging yourself to do the best you can that month. I hope you enjoy the group challenge format and if you have any ideas on how this challenge can be more motivational/accessible, please let me know!

Becca Tyler (scrappybec) | 296 comments I personally have no interest in tracking points for what I've read, but you can't be all things to all people. I appreciate all the effort that our moderators put into making this a fun group for all of us!

Alessandra (chibisuke) | 266 comments I really appreciate that it's not a competition. :) I'll let you know if I have any ideas on how this challenge can be more motivational, Kassandra :D

Yes! I don't think we're doing anything here that's meant to be a competition. It's all just meant to be fun and motivating. By not in a competitive way.

For 'Read a book for a mini-challenge: 3 points per book
Complete a multi-book mini-challenge: 10 extra points', is this for if you read a book/s for challenges like the 2015 Alphabet Soup or Decade challenge? Or are these not considered mini-challenges? Still learning the group lingo :)

S.J., the Alphabet Soup was started as a mini-challenge, so it is a multibook mini-challenge. The Decade challenge is, I believe, also a multibook mini-challenge.

If it's not one of the big group challenges (Genre Challenge, Nonfiction Challenge and World Lit challenge), then it's probably a mini-challenge. Hope that helps!

It does, thanks!

Yep. It's just a long "mini."
Mini-challenge is just the term we use for side challenges to the main Group Activities such as the Group Challenge or Group Reads.

message 25: by Becca (new)

Becca Tyler (scrappybec) | 296 comments Challenges aren't competitive; they are inspirational! Inspire us to read more and broaden our reading.

Holly (hollycoulson) | 1949 comments Mod
That's a very good attitude to take, Becca.

Just to reiterate, it is definitely not a competition. It's more just a different way of doing your challenge, and it pushes you to read different books, much like what this group is about. :)

message 27: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 08, 2014 04:50AM) (new)

Does the Non-fiction challenge fall under 'genre challenge' for points? Or do the monthly non-fiction group books not count in this challenge, besides general book/1 pt? Thanks!

message 28: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
The goal is to have 5 group read books (genre/NF/world/YA/classic) worth 5 points each for reading/participation in discussion.

Then there will be widgets and 3 points each for books read in the genre/NF category/region of the month.

thanks for the clarification :)

Ok, one more question :p

In January I'm reading Northanger Abbey, for the Decade Mini Challenge, which will be 3 pts (for reading a book in a mini-challenge). January's Genre is also Historical Fiction, which Northanger Abbey falls under. Do I also count the 3pts for reading a Genre book, for a total of 6pts, or do you only count books once for points, even if they fall into two categories?

Eventually I'll get this points challenge figured out lol.

Based on previous discussions, I believe you can take the 6 points. There will be some things that overlap like that, which is a little bonus.

Kassandra | -1 comments Sorry for the delay, The Princess Bride has been holding me captive today. To confirm, you can use the book across the categories (for 6 points as outlined in the original question). This should be a fun way to make our points count while expanding our horizons!

I love that the Princess Bride has been holding you captive! Must call Inigo Montoya to rescue you!

message 37: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Renee - I'm seriously in love with that book today. If only work could take a backseat, I would have loved to get through it in one day! There are so many rich details in the book and each character has a great backstory. A treasure!
