Main character Matthew(or something similar) is transported from modern world to a fantasy one. He becomes a good magician because poetry there is magic. he's friends with a dragon. he marries the queen, later brings his parents to that world, they are wizards now too.. i think later the protagonist of the series is his son. everything's sappy. there's a lot of talk about purgatory. author's name possibly starts with an S??

It's a series i read as a kid. Wasn't my favoutite.. but i really want to find it! Help appreciated :)
