This is the thread where you can submit a task idea for the 50 Point Task contest. The thread will open for submissions on December 15 and will close at Midnight Eastern time on January 5. Voting will start the next day January 6 and will close at the end of the day on January 12. If the moderators determine that the vote is close, a 3-day runoff poll will be held. The person whose idea gets the most votes will host the 50 point task for the Winter Challenge.

The 50 point task will require:
1. Only 3 options.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.
4. No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
5. Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.
6. No “free choice” options will be allowed. This is a challenge, so tasks that have no element of challenge do not fit the purpose.
7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.

Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.

* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and he/she must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.

The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.

Please include your readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.

PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments will be deleted.

Trish (trishhartuk) | 3675 comments Trishhartuk’s idea: The Astounding Award for Best New Writer

At the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin in August, millennial author Jeannette Ng, the winner of the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, caused sufficient controversy over whether it was appropriate to still have an award named after Campbell, that by the end of the month the name of the award had changed to the Astounding Award for Best New Writer.

Book 1: Read a book where the author’s initials can be found in “JEANNETTE NG”, which has a first published date of 2000 or later.

Book 2: As her argument was about the tone he set for the SF genre - "Sterile. Male. White” - read a book written by a female author, or a male author of colour. If you choose a male author, provide a link to indicate his ethnicity.

Book 3: Read a book where the title you read is different to that listed under “Original Title”, or one that has been published under two different titles in the same language.

Dee (austhokie) | 8947 comments Diversify Your Reading
In 2019, I undertook a challenge to diversity my reading both in characters and authors. This led me down the path of discovering many new authors that i never would have found.

For the purpose of this challenge, diverse characters/authors were divided into 9 categories: 1) Author/Character of Color; 2) Transgendered Author/Character; 3) Refugee/Immigrant Character/Author; 4) LBGTQUIA Author/Character; 5) Author/Character from Religion Other than Own; 6) Author/Character with a Mental Illness; 7) Neurodiverse Author/Character; 8) Native/Indigenous Author/Character and 9) Author/Character with a Physical Disability

For this challenge you will read 3 books; all books MUST be by different authors. At least TWO of the authors must be new to you. You MAY REPEAT one of the diversity categories ONCE

Book 1 Read a fiction book where the main character falls into one of the diversity categories
Book 2 Read a fiction book where the Author falls into one of the diversity categories
Book 3 Read a non-fiction book that is about one of the diversity categories

Coralie As my mother just missed out in being in my task for last season, I thought I would do a task just for her.

Coralie
Not with a whimper

Book 1. The Conversationalist
At her memorial service, everyone who spoke mentioned, in one way or another how much Mum loved to talk.
Read a book with one of the following words intact in the title, subtitle, series name or author's name:
talk, say, tell, speak, chat, gab, utter.

Book 2. The Survivor
For almost twenty years Mum had been on dialysis three days a week. In the last few years, she was known to the medical staff as "the one who survived calciphylaxis."
Read a book with a word in the title of at least two letters that can be made from the letters in CALCIPHYLAXIS.
Letters can be used only as many times as they appear in the word.

Book 3. The Drama Queen
Not for Mum a quiet fading away or passing in her sleep. She went out with a bang - or at least a burst of blood. After the police, the ambulance and the coroner's staff left we had to face a bathroom of blood.
Read a book from popular drama books.

The three books must total at least 750 pages. No books with the genres children or kids may be used.

For the Love of Poe

Years ago, on a mad dash to a tiny bookstore that I spied on my way home from school, I came across Poe for the first time. "Tales of Mystery and Terror" was the book that opened doors to other genres for me, and I realized that not all brilliant books need to be chirpy or have to have a happy ending.

For this task, read three books, one from each option.
Re-reads are not allowed.
Required: Total number of pages should be no less than 750.

Book 1: Read a book where the title/subtitle contains at least 5 letters that appear in "THE TALES OF MYSTERY AND TERROR"
(series name not eligible)

Book 2: Read a book that is shelved as Macabre
Required: Mention the page number where you found the book.

Book 3: According to some sources, Poe called out the name "Reynolds" multiple times on his deathbed. Read a book by an author whose initials appear in REYNOLDS.

Winter - Love it or Leave It!

Growing up in Canada, winter weather is part of our culture. This year the snow started flying in early November and it will come and go until late March (if we are lucky) into April. Of course, it's a big country and some of my fellow Canadians will have a longer stretch of cold weather than what I experience in Southern Ontario.

Option 1: Loving Winter
As a child, I loved winter and was often outside skating, tobogganing, snowshoeing, and even going winter camping. For this option read a book with a cover that depicts a winter scene and has a main page genre, embedded or standalone of either adventure or sports.

Option 2: Surviving Winter
Once the cold weather arrives, the temperatures plummet and our winter storms can be quite challenging with blizzards and snow squalls limiting travel and at times shutting down the highways. It's not uncommon to get stuck overnight away from home if it is stormy. For this option read a book where the author's initials can be found in STORM STAYED.

Option 3: Escaping Winter
Now that I am older, I tend to take my holidays in the winter and plan an escape to a warmer climate. It is so nice to be back in shorts and sandals instead of winter parkas and boots! For this option, choose a book that has a title of three words or more where the beginning letter of each word can be found in the phrase WINTER GETAWAY.

Discovering & Reading in "my happy place" in the Heart of America

I’ve enjoyed a career as a librarian for nearly 50 years, so much so that I came out of retirement to be the librarian at a tiny rural community. Some of my favorite tasks include helping library users find new authors and books they will enjoy and obtaining books not in our library; either using interlibrary loan or online. This 50-point challenge highlights discovering different titles and my joy in living (and reading) in the rural heart of America.

For this task, read three books, one from each option.
Re-reads are not allowed; we're discovered different titles!
No books with the genres children or kids on the main book page may be used.
Books whose main page lists any of these genres: Sequential Art, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga may not be used.

Required: Total number of pages should total at least 750.

Option 1: I’ve lived in two states over the years: Kansas and Wyoming. Read a book set in one of these states.

Option 2: Both Kansas and Wyoming became states in the second half of the 19th century. Read a book first published between 1860-1899.

Option 3: Many states give awards for books, sometimes because they are set in the state, sometimes because authors live there, and sometimes because citizens of the state choose their favorites. For this option, I’m adding a couple of states where some of my kids now live.

Read a book that has won or been nominated for an award EITHER with the state name in the award name (Kansas, Wyoming, Missouri, or California) OR the William Allen White Children's Book Award (voted on by the children of Kansas).

Many of the Award books may not qualify, so review the Main Page Genres carefully.
