[ Name ] Jefferson O'Donnell Cypress
[ nicknames ]
▸ Jeff — it's not a nickname that he likes, but depending on how valuable you are to him or not, he might let it slide.
▸ Jeffy — see, it's not a nickname that Jefferson particularly like. A select few people (read: his siblings) can sometimes get away with using it, and even then, that's only sometimes. And he'll never admit that he actually kind of likes it, because it makes him feel like he hasn't completely screwed up as a brother.
▸ Jefferson O'Donnell — mainly used by his mother. O'Donnell (his mother's maiden name) is, in fact, Jefferson's given middle name even though this isn't the nineteenth century anymore. And really, this is only used when there's serious business. Because let's be real: Jefferson never got in trouble.
Some address him simply by his last name — a practice that he finds highly impractical since there are so many other members of his family with the same last name.

[ Age ] Twenty-three (23)
[ date of birth ] January 6, 1991
[ place of birth ] New York, New York, U. S. A.

[ Gender ] Male
[ sexual orientation ] Heterosexual
[ status ] In a relationship with Josie West. Nothing that you need know about.

[ Social Class ] Upper Class
[ occupation ] Business and management at the Cypress HQ.

[ Appearance ]

(view spoiler)
[ eye color ] Clear, striking blue.
[ hair color ] Dark, rich brown.
[ height ] Six feet and one half of an inch tall.
[ distinguishing feature(s) ] Many find his eyes quite striking. If you're looking for something scandalous — a tramp stamp of an alicorn, perhaps? — then you're in for disappointment. Jefferson Cypress wouldn't even think of marring his already-flawless skin.
[ written description ] Jefferson Cypress has always been the golden boy — and not just because of his brain. The heir to the Cypress hotel empire has been known to cause heart attacks in men and women alike, simply by flashing that brilliant smile in their direction. (Not really, of course. Jefferson Cypress has never been known to cause any physical damage to the general public.) But in the eyes of the public? He's perfect. He looks like he could be a model — his sister is a model — and has the mind of a businessman. In fact, he's been named one of the most eligible bachelors in the business world. According to a poll, 87.9% of the website's members would "tap that."

[ Personality ] Jefferson Cypress is a calculating son of a bitch. The thing is, most people don't realize it. It's too far hidden under his perfect, beautiful, charming persona. And the thing is, it's not that that's even fake. Jefferson grew up in the world of business — a world where how you act to one person can make or break you. So his manners are impeccable, his posture regal. Some would call him a gentleman, a chivalrous young man of New York's high society. Everything that he does is careful, calculated — and it all fits in to his master plan in life. Not that he's ever had to really plan everything — after all, he is heir apparent to the Cypress empire. He's had his life laid out for him: he didn't really need to do anything on his own.

Of course, he's always felt the need to prove himself anyway. He's smart — but how smart? Smart enough to get into Harvard. He's handsome — but how handsome? Handsome enough to land himself on the People's sexiest men alive list. He's certainly charming and charismatic — but how charming and charismatic? Enough to raise a hefty amount of money for charities than he doesn't actually care about as much as he pretends to.

He's an actor — how else is he supposed to keep up with public appearance? He needs to convince them that he's the charming, handsome young (but certainly capable) Cypress heir. He spends time figuring it all out — how much time he needs to spend on social media, how many interviews he should permit, turning down the opportunity to be on the next season of Dancing With the Stars. He knows this business, the business of people. That's the thing: he understands people — he simply doesn't empathize with them.

Really, Jefferson shouldn't be expected to love his family: they've never shown any spectacular love to him. Family was a responsibility, a job, and he just so happened to have seven siblings because his parents had apparently never heard of birth control. He's not apathetic. He does care about his family — he just wouldn't consider it love. It's care, not love. (Although, as far as the media is concerned, he adores he family to the moon and back.) And Jefferson's okay with not loving people. It's not a necessary thing to life. He is rich beyond most people's dreams, he has a good job, a good inheritance waiting for him — he has everything he could possibly want. He is content.

(But somehow, Josephina — the intern, of all people — has weaseled her way into his cold, Ebenezer Scrooge-like heart.)

[ History ] The Cypress family is much like how you might imagine it: filthy rich, famous without actually doing much of anything, and distant from each other. If you think that Jefferson Cypress grew up in a loving household, you'd be wrong. (That's okay, though; they want you to be wrong. It's part of their image.)

For his whole life, two things have defined Jefferson Cypress: the fact that he is, in fact, the heir to the hotel empire started by his great-great-grandfather, and secondly, the fact that he is the ultimate Golden Boy. In the eyes of most, he does no wrong. And the rest? Well, they can't usually catch him in the act — because it's not so much his devious plans for everything, it's simply the way he conducts his life.

People, to Jefferson, are disposable. It's a business world. Some people are needed, like him — and some people aren't. And Jefferson, as one of the indisposables? He gets what he wants, because he's smart, and wealthy, and charming, and golden, and, most importantly, powerful.

So when he met Josephina West the Intern, things changed. It wasn't supposed to work out the way it did. It was simple — cruel, but simple — if she slept with him, she wouldn't be fired. And she needed the internship, of course. And at first, it was as he had expected — she was somewhat (and completely understandably) resentful, it was a good way for him to get off, and he had total control.

But somehow she crept up on him.

It wasn't sudden; it was gradual. It stopped being a side thought and started being something he wanted. He stopped making up reasons to leave and she started making up reasons for him to stay. He wouldn't call it falling in love, but there were definitely... feelings for the girl that he hadn't thought would develop. Hell, she was never supposed to show a wink of interest in him aside from lust. He was taking advantage of her. From the very start he had been. And yet... she saw something in him, something that probably wasn't even there, and he wasn't sure he wanted that to go away.

[ Name ] Elizabeth Renee Aldridge
[ nicknames ]
▸ Ella — just. ella.
▸ Her dad used to call her Lizza — weird nickname, she knows — and if anyone else even thinks about using that name for her, they will probably be slapped.

[ Age ] Twenty-two [22]
[ date of birth ] November 11, 1992
[ place of birth ] New York, New York, U. S. A.

[ Gender ] Female
[ sexual orientation ] Heterosexual
[ relationship status ] Pretending to be engaged

[ Social Class ] Upper — but determined to make it on her own
[ occuptation ] Independent coffee shop owner

[ Appearance ]

[ eye color ] Hazel
[ hair color ] Reddish-brown
[ height ] 5'5"
[ distinguishing feature(s) ]
▸ Multiple ear piercings
[ written description ] Even if Ella dressed like the perfect little princess that people expected of her — which, of course, she doesn't — nothing would be able to take the mischievious glint from her eyes. Don't let that sweet smile distract you; she's determined and prepared to take down anyone to stand in her way. She always looks a bit tense, a bit stressed (probably because she always is). But hey. At least her hair looks pretty good, right?

[ Personality ] Ella Aldridge is nothing if not determined — if she puts her mind to something, you can be damn well sure that she's going to achieve that goal. The stubbornness was always hers — the relentlessness was something that her father had always encouraged. They're going to try to keep you from following your dreams, he had told her, and you can't let them do that. You have to be stronger than them, better than them. There is no better way to crush your enemies than with success.

And she does work for that. Tirelessly so. Ella's almost always working — it's what she lives for. She doesn't have anyone left who she loves; her father and brother died. She loves her mom, of course she does; but it's not like Etta's ever really been there for Ella. She was always too busy traveling, with business, with friends, with something. And so Ella values being self-sufficient. She doesn't want your help, or anyone's help.

She also wants closure. It's something she values deeply — closure in everything, from relationships to a board game. Anything. She never got the closure that she wanted with James or her dad, and she's not going to let that happen to herself ever again.

[ strengths ]
▸ Coffee art — those little designs? Yeah, she's basically a master.
▸ Singing — yes, she can sing. That's a thing.
▸ Persistence — did you think her business survives on her laziness? How 'bout no.

[ weaknesses ]
▸ Temper — the smallest of things are prone to set her off. Beware of Mt. Ella.
▸ Defensiveness — she has a tendency to feel threatened, and yeah, she gets defensive.
▸ Relaxing — she's almost always stressed and tense. Probably not a good thing, but hey.

[ likes ]
▸ Coffee
▸ Karaoke
▸ Bowling

[ dislikes ]
▸ Misogyny
▸ Idiocy
▸ Instant coffee

[ History ] Henry Aldridge and Etta St. Clair (who did, in fact, keep her maiden name even after marriage) were a power couple. It was as simple as that: an old-money hotshot lawyer who had just closed a massive murder case, and a supermodel. And of course two people had two beautiful children — James and Elizabeth.

Because of her line of work, Etta was constantly traveling in order to be in this photoshoot and interview for that magazine; for fashion week and for fittings. It wasn't that Etta didn't care about her family — rather, it was simply that her work came first.

For all of James and Ella's childhoods, it was their father who raised them. They were never in want, never in need — it didn't hurt, of course, that the Aldridge family was rolling in money; but they were also never neglected. No one who knew Henry Aldridge doubted, for even a second, that he loved his children more than life itself.

Every month, Henry would take James and 'Lizza' bowling — the alley near their house had a special deal on the first Friday of every month. Going every month — and more — cultivated Ella's love of bowling. Of course, most people simply think it's lame; but to Ella, it's a way to remember her father.

When Ella was sixteen, twenty-three-year-old James Aldridge died of a freak heart attack. It was a complete shock — James, although he didn't live an exceptionally healthy lifestyle, had never had any major health issues in the past. The cause was suspected to be Brugada syndrome, a genetic heart condition. The suspicions were confirmed when, after tests, Henry Aldridge was diagnosed with Brugada syndrome.

Things were returning back to normal when Henry had his first heart attack. As a result, he had an ICD (implanted cardioverter-defibrillator) implanted. The hope was, of course, that if he were to have another heart attack, the ICD would save his life.

They were wrong, because nineteen-year-old Ella Aldridge had to return to Laertes from college to attend her father's funeral.

It hurt. Badly. Devastating wasn't the right word for it — deep down, Ella had known that it was really only a matter of time before it happened. But she had to escape the press — had to properly grieve — and she did that by returning to school, to work. Her father had always told her that she could achieve anything she wanted — she could make a name for herself, greater than his had ever been, greater than her mother's would ever be.

And as a nineteen-year-old barista with a hefty trust fund and a monthly allowance from her (very valuable) supermodel mother, she could do whatever she damn well pleased.

So when Ella Aldridge returned to Laertes two and a half years later, she bought a little storefront downtown with an apartment up top, and Henry's was in business.

What she didn't expect was for Weston Grace to duck into her store in an attempt to hide from the press, and she certainly didn't expect to be caught on camera in a rather... compromising position with him.

And pretending to be engaged to him? Never in her wildest dreams... and yet here she is.

[ Family ]
Henry Aldridge : 10/10
▸ Etta St. Clair : 8/10
James Aldridge [would be 29] : 10/10

[ Other Relationships ]
▸ Weston Grace : 4/10
