LOL! Finally posted on here only to follow my own clues to solve it finally.
Airship is actually a creature(alien?) in a shell. Had a bit of a steampunk vibe. Mechanic has some type of bond with the creature. Creature needs to grow or go somewhere. Captain is involved...
recently been reading a lot of Scalzi, Doctorrow, Martha Wells, Anne Leckie, Sanderson, but also like to read anthologies.
I am pretty sure I read it online.
