M (1931) Directed by Fritz Lang. Starring Peter Lorre, Ellen Widmann, Otto Wernicke

M is an early German sound film masterpiece, a true-crime story based on the unspeakable acts of a serial child-murderer. When nightly police raids fail to find the criminal, disrupting thieves’ and beggars’ “business as usual”, the underworld mobilizes to find him themselves. Peter Lorre, in his first major film role, played the killer to perfection. Writhing under Lang’s direction, Lorre developed a performance as skin-crawling as a clammy sheen of sweat.

Peter Kürten, the 'Vampire of Dusseldorf', was the inspiration for the fictional murderer, Hans Beckert. Kürten was one of a trio of repulsive serial killers whose crimes riveted Germany in the period between the two World Wars.

Yes, I saw it. Great example of a classic old black and white movie. And I totally agree with what you san about Peter Lorre.

Wow! I'm surprised anyone else has seen it! Thanks for replying, Hari. I have seen some of Peter's later work, but I think this one is my favourite.

Fishface | 19176 comments I own my own copy of that fine film. I know this movie is thoroughly fictionalized, but I lurve the ending.

Peter Lorre was pitch-perfect in this story. Years after I first saw it, when I learned his own daughter talked her way out of the clutches of a serial killer, I saw it again with new eyes.

Diane in Australia | 640 comments Congrats, on owning a copy, FF! How cool! Yeah, I knew it was a fictional story, that was just 'inspired' by Peter Kürten.

That is so interesting about Peter's daughter!
"Catharine nearly fell victim to “Hillside Stranglers” Angelo J. Buono and Kenneth A. Bianchi, who approached her one night in 1977 intending to abduct and murder her as they had and would do to ten women before the law caught up with them. Learning she was Peter Lorre’s daughter, they just let her go. They were movie fans and liked Lorre’s work. Catharine was 25 at the time. After the capture of Bianchi and Buono, and their photographs were made public, Catharine realized who they were. Later in interviews, Catharine stated that she never felt threatened by either man: She believed it to be a casual and friendly encounter. Bianchi and Buono stated that the only reason her life was spared was because Peter Lorre was her father."
