I think if you search for the book in the group bookshelf it should bring up a list of group threads related to the book. May be worth a try 🙂

Sandy | 1665 comments Shawnie - this looks like something I would read thanks so much. Any idea on a book with an MC reporter?

message 103: by Shawnie (new)

Sandy, I don't have any ideas for that one yet. I'll let you know...

I read The Hourglass Factory which was ok, though didn't blow me away. It's a very light historical mystery featuring a plucky young female reporter who gets muddled in with a lot of suffragette events in London. Easy read and not too long, which are sometimes my top criteria 🤣

Hayley | 550 comments I've just started reading The Five-Year Plan for that. Only read the first chapter so no idea if its any good, although the reviews don't look too promising. It's quite short (300ish pages) and only 99p on kindle though!

For the journalist / reporter one I'm thinking of Numero Zero by Umberto Eco. The MC is a journalist, and It's short at just over 200 pages.

Sandy | 1665 comments Hey - didn't we just read or maybe not just because I am still catching up - a book where a mage is absorbed into a character? I thought it was Dragonbone Chair - but I am now sure it was not. Can anyone remember that book?

I read The Alienist which looks like you have already read, Sandy, but it doesn't look like you have read the 2nd book The Angel of Darkness yet. Just an idea. I know the series is named after Kreizler, but John the reporter, seemed more of the main character in the first book to me.

I don't remember anything like that in Dragonbone Chair but The Magician by Raymond Feist has a character called Thomas who finds the armour of a Dragon Lord and is slowly taken over by its magic. Is that any help?

message 110: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 1665 comments It does help because it narrows down the search. It must have been something that I read without a bom. it would work perfect for two characters merging to one challenge. Dang - now I just have to figure out if I read it or listened to it.

The Heart of Myrial has a character whose consciousness ends up merged with another character when his physical body dies.

I used Starsight for that one.

The first few Harry Dresden books have A reporter MC but not THE MC.

Ophelia Gunn (opheliagunn) | 78 comments Just dug up Dispatches by Michael Herr from the back of my bookcase. It's non-fic but I think I've found my 'reporter mc' book :)

message 115: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 1665 comments That looks interesting - will you let me know how you like it?

message 116: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 1665 comments The War Reporter - trying to get through this one - not exactly my cup of tea but I will give it another couple days.

Falynn - the TyGrammarSaurus Rex | 524 comments I am so behind with my reading *sob*

can someone remind me when the summer bonus hero ends? does it also get the extra 5 days?

thanks!

Hi Falynn, Wayland did give us the 5 extra days. So, it was supposed to end Sept. 22nd and now ends Sept. 27th with the extra days.

Falynn - the TyGrammarSaurus Rex | 524 comments Fantastic. thank you!

message 120: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1561 comments Me too Falynn! September in particular has been a really slow reading month. I can't believe we're at the 20th of the month already!

Ooh, I didn't realise we got an extra five days for the summer bonus. That's good news for me, I don't think I'll manage to finish my last book by the end of Tuesday (though I'll try) but should do it easily by the 27th, so that's ace. I've missed most of the villains but I've been trying really hard to get the heroes done, bonuses included.

Am I right in thinking there's been a Halloween bonus in previous years or is it a bonus Halloween group read that I'm thinking of?

Vinca, I seem to remember there usually being a Halloween bonus, but I could be misremembering since this year has my brain a bit all over the place. LOL.

Halloween bonus, you say?

hmmm.....

keep your eyes peeled...

I thought the summer bonus ended Aug 31 plus five days.

I'm already rushing to finish the bonuses we already have; not sure I can squeeze in another!

No, summer doesn't end with August.

So I was stressing in August for nothing??

message 126: by Sandy (new)

Sandy | 1665 comments A friend once told me not to tell him not to worry because it obviously does some good - most of what he worried about never happened - so it worked.

Mira Grant's (Seanan McGuire) Feed, book 1, has reporters for the MC's. I think I'll go with book 2 for this one. It's a zombie book. I really enjoyed the first.

It's not too hard to follow threads in groups but not much of anything else. :(

message 131: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 550 comments I thought I'd accidentally done something to turn them off. Its not just me then. Hope it gets fixed soon, its really annoying!

But yeah, hopefully it will be fixed soon!

Falynn - the TyGrammarSaurus Rex | 524 comments Hi Wayland

For Bald is Beautiful, would it count if the character was bald on top of their head but still has hair on the back/sides, or do they need to be a complete skinhead?

thanks :)

message 134: by Wayland, Ernest Scribbler (new)

Wayland Smith | 3547 comments Mod
I'd think completely, but if you're struggling, well... it's supposed to be fun.

Falynn - the TyGrammarSaurus Rex | 524 comments No worries, just thought I'd check :)

Will keep this one in reserve then in case I can't find something more fitting by the end of the month!

message 136: by Nadja (new)

I have a question regarding Bald is Beautiful, too. Does an alien count, which race just has no hair?

thank you :)

If the race just doesn't have any hair? Sure.

message 138: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 793 comments Would you say The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires could work for Mr Terrific: Almost killed himself- read a book ... where a death is prevented by an outside agency/force/person? Lots of deaths are prevented.
I'm looking through the books I haven't used, that I've read after Mr Terrific was announced, since I forgot about him (poor fella).

Haven't read that one (it's on my list), but from what you're saying, probably.

message 140: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 793 comments I was thinking along the lines of if 'preventing a death' would be ok in a normal sense - some people prevents deaths, and it doesn't have to be an outside force, like deus ex machina or something similar.

I’ve got all mine planned Vinca, just trying to get through them and very conflicted about if I want there to be a Christmas bonus or another portal hero. Every time I think I’m on top of it, Wayland does something sneaky.

message 146: by Hayley (new)

Hayley | 550 comments I have 5 books left to read plus this month's fantasy book of the month and I've just checked and all but one are over 500 pages. I didn't plan this very well haha!

message 147: by Johanne (new)

Johanne *the biblionaut* | 793 comments I've made a reading plan for the rest of the year. I'm a good planner but not a great follower of plans, so we'll see :D

message 148: by Nadja (new)

Nadja | 232 comments I also made plans for this month to finish my roaster. I only need 2 more books for this. one I just finished this week. :D

message 149: by Vinca (new)

Vinca Russell (vinxlady) | 1561 comments I think I've got it mostly planned now, just not sure I'll have time for all of it so I've been trying to find shorter substitutions. I've got 4 left to finish the main set of heroes, but then another 6 if I want to finish the remaining portal heroes too 😕 Two are already in progress so that's something at least!
