A fiction book, set in one of the Scandinavian countries, perhaps Norway. The setting was rural... forests, pastures, mountains, meadows, trees and snow and nights at the fire. No industry or anything like electricity. No vehicles or roads. So perhaps nineteenth century remote Scandinavian countryside, definitely pre-industrial. People used wick lamps... clothing was sewed and mended... animals may have been brought into the house in winter.
STYLE
The writing style was simple and evocative with Scandinavian names of people and places and the sense of time standing still. A warm fuzzy feeling.
PLOT DETAILS
The main character's name was Noah. Noah's father, mother and sister. I can't remember their names. They lived in the mountains, on a farmstead, and the father makes long walks lasting several days or more to a distant town. This was seasonal... once or twice a year. It's possible Noah's father was a trapper... the long trips may have been to sell pelts. When he returned from the journey he would have surprises, something like spices or an item of clothing for Noah's mother.
YEAR PUBLISHED
I picked it up secondhand in 1983 in a bookshop in Wales. Because of the natural setting it's definitely the type of book that someone visiting the Welsh countryside would have liked. So published before 1983... probably sometime in 1970s or earlier. It was a hardback. I don't know if it was originally written in English or had been translated into English.
