So here is how the results came out
The Handmaid's Tale 12 votes, 19.7%
The Plague of Doves A Novel 2 votes, 3.3%
The Snow Bride 2 votes, 3.3%
The White Tiger 3 votes, 4.9%
The Girl with No Shadow A Novel 2 votes, 3.3%
The Bell Jar 11 votes, 18.0%
The Double Bind 0 votes, 0.0%
The Shadow of the Wind 12 votes, 19.7%
Julia's Chocolates 13 votes, 21.3%
The English Patient 4 votes, 6.6%
The Bright Forever A Novel 0 votes, 0.0%
Short Girls A Novel 0 votes, 0.0%

As you can see Julia's Chocolates is clearly going to lead off the month of November. However, after that we are going to have to have a run off. It came down to a tie between The Handmaid's Tale and The Shadow of the Wind. The Bell Jar was a close follow up with 11 votes.
I will post a run off poll now that will be up through Tuesday. The winner will be the second read for November.
I know these books are all popular and there was discussion about doing more than one or carrying them over until December but I really think with the holiday season what sounds good in September may not make for much reading/discussion time come mid Nov - December.

My internet has been down for the last few days. The poll is closed now and it was CLOSE!!!
By only ONE vote (see every vote counts) The Shadow of the Wind will be the second read for November.
Like i said it was VERY close. If a group of you want to get together and read this book as a group I really do encourage that and invite you to use the book club forums for your discussions. Somewhat like the groups who do the chunky reads like vanity fair do. That is TOTALLY okay with me and I love to see organic discussions and organized reads sprout up. Either that or someone can certainly nominate it again for another month. It was a very close poll so I hope the excitement about this book doesn't falter simply because of one vote.

Aw shucks! I was really hoping The Handmaid's Tale would win, and even tried promoting it on the what are you reading thread to get it one or two more votes (since a bunch of people were discussing it there). Oh well. If any of the others that voted for The Handmaid's Tale would still like to plan a discussion of it, I would love to participate. I know many have read this book already. I have not read it yet, but do have a copy sitting on my bookshelf here at home, waiting for me to pick it up. :o)

Nadia A (bagambo) Hey Sheila! I wanted The Handmaid's Tale to win too! I would definitely participate in a discussion of the book! Sounds like a great idea! Cheers!

Ally (goodreadscomuser_allhug) oh no! - trust me to go away for two days and miss such an important poll! - but my vote for the handmaids tale would have led to stalemate so it's possibly just as well I wasn't here! - I am disappointed though as it's Margaret Atwood's 70th Birthday in November, which would have made reading one of her books a good way to celebrate. Never mind!

I'm def up for Tera's suggestion of a separate discussion as I'll be reading it in November anyway as I'd planned. Thats if there's interest from other too that is.

Ally

That would be fun, Ally! Count me in! :)

Sarah (sarah23l) I'm currently reading both books. I would be glad to join your discussion of The Handmaid's Tale!

I am definately up for reading The Handmaid's Tale and discussing it in November! Especially since as Ally says, Margaret Atwood's 70th birthday is in November. Let's just plan on adding it as an additional discussion for that month! There were enough voting for it to get a good discussion going.

Laura (apenandzen) | 1445 comments The Blind Assassin was a terrific Atwood I read earlier this year and LOVED - if anyone needs more Atwood suggestions.

Julie (julmille) | 391 comments Shadow of the Wind was a great read for me...I'm sure you'll all love it. Takes a few chapters to really get into it, but once you're in...you can't put it down!! Happy Reading!!!

Cathie (countrygarden) | 95 comments I really enjoy Margaret Atwood also. I read the Handmaid's Tale years ago so would be interested in reading it again and join in the discussion.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Can I ask if we have to read these books, as I have read a few already?

Thanks x

Fiona, the books for Novemeber are just books that will be discussed here in Novemeber. You do not have to read the books. If you want to read one you can, then participate in the discussion. You can read the book ahead of time, or read it during the discussion. If a book is being discussed that you have read already (recently or even a long time ago), you are more than welcome to still participate in the discussion.

Kirstin (ktippie) | 28 comments I'm about 10 pages from finishing Julia's Chocolates and, well, without spoiling it for anyone, what a great book. Could not put it down!! I can't wait until we start discussing this book. Everyone Enjoy!!

message 16: by Amanda (new)

Amanda I started Julia's Chocolates yesterday and so far so good. I don't want to put it down until it is finished. Unfortunately, I still have a job that requires my attention. It has actually had me laughing out loud! Can't wait to see what happens next.

Lostinfiction | 1 comments just got an email that the group will start reading "The Shadow of the Wind" next week - what a coincidence! I stopped by the library literally just a couple of days ago and picked up that very book :) I'd been hearing fantastic things about it and had been meaning to read it for a while now. Am halfway through and it's very hard to have to put it down! I'm looking forward to discussing it some more (but can't find the right thread for it right now) :P

Kirstin (ktippie) | 28 comments Finished Julia's Chocolates and Loved It!! Great charecters that I could relate to.

Kat (A Journey In Reading) (ajourneyinreading) | 390 comments I LOVED "The Shadow of the Wind"! It was a beautifully written book. I am reading his "The Angel's Game" now.

message 21: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 275 comments I also loved The Shadow of the Wind. It has a place in my top ever books. Looking forward to Julia if library ever gets it. It seems any book with Julia in the title must be waited for.

message 22: by SJ (new)

SJ (sarahsimon) This is a random suggestion but I'm reading East of Eden and am slightly behind the club schedule. Breaking discussion down into chapter limits (1-10, 11-20, for example) would make it easier to follow/participate in the discussion without tripping on later plot points.
