Emerson Noble | 14 comments I enjoyed the novel Octavian Nothing because it is not your typical story about a slave boy due to his interesting uprising and childhood while living in Boston during the Revolutionary War. Octavian is sort of a scientific experiment and has been closely observed from the moment he was born by a group of white male philosophers. This novel is pretty unsettling because it is a view of slavery that is not talked about as much because he doesn't recognize that he is a slave in a scientific experiment.
As much as I enjoyed this novel, it was pretty dark because you're realizing what horrible things these white men are doing to a little boy just for the sake of science and in all of it he thinks he is just special up until a series of events that leads him to realize the truth. This is definitely a novel I would recommend to high school students who are learning about slavery because it shows a side of slavery you probably wouldn't get too deep into in a text book.
