This should have been a much quicker than it was. I just could not stay engaged. It felt like a very young adolescent book in its writing style and the lack of psychological depth. Not sure why this would make a list of 101 books to read in a life time. I can think of far more deserving reads.
I enjoyed this one. The young Jeanette was very funny and engaging. My mom was a very straitlaced Christian lady, and I grew up in a small-town church. Sometimes at church camp I would encounter folks that were a bit more out on the fringe, like the ladies in the book. They fascinated and frightened me; it was fun to recognize some of them in the book. I wasn't as interested in the older Jeanette-- it was fun seeing the world through her young eyes.
