Sarah B | 391 comments I have Neverwhere and The Graveyard Book. And I probably can get a lot of others from the library.

And my trip to the ranch was cancelled. The lady I work with out there is sick with the flu. She's been bad sick since Wednesday.

@Sarah. Neverwhere was my first Gaiman book and is still my favorite. I've been thinking of rereading it. When do you think you'll start?

message 103: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Well I can read books pretty fast so we can read it whenever you want. I'm almost done with Trolls. I'm on page 386.

I have both of those in audiobooks. Read by Neil himself :) I'm game, but it looks like you may be moving faster than I am right now! I'll join in whenever you guys start, but I'll probably finish last (which I don't mind, honestly. Either one of those would be a great book to bridge the year with!) because I am determined to finish one (more) physical book from my shelves this year.

message 105: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Stacie, are you saying you have not read one actual paper book all year? Or did I misunderstand you? Virtually all the books I read are paper. I did read 2 stories online on a sci-fi website but that was a rarity.

So I have finished:

Trolls by Stefan Spjut

The Four Thousand, The Eight Hundred by Greg Egan

The two books in many ways were the opposite of each other, especially in page count! One was 456 pages while the other was only 89. I think I liked Trolls better. I was quite disappointed by this Egan book..it was missing the science I had liked in the other one.

I can start reading Neverwhere sometime this week.

Blargh! That's what I get for trying to type on my phone! It should have said "one more physical book from my shelves". I've met my personal challenge of 12 from my stacks, but I'd like to beat it.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks because I've got a long daily commute, and I'm using my Kindle more because it's tons lighter to carry back and forth to work. I've slowed down on buying physical books because I moved closer to a good library (I try to only buy things I'm going to want to read multiple times). But I've still got a significant backlog of unread books on my shelves, many of which I've had for years.

message 107: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments What I hate is when I type stuff carefully on my phone but then the goofy auto correct on my phone decides to go change words! Like it will change a word to some totally different word and if I don't catch it, then my sentence looks like gibberish! And when I DO want spelling help...does it know the word I do want? Nope! Even if I'm only one letter off it acts like it's totally clueless! The spell check must be a dumb check instead. At least the one on my phone is! I just wish it would work right. But it doesn't. And it loves to change were to we're! So I'm constantly hitting the back button to fix it!

It's been ages since I listened to an audio book. And I do have lots of books on my shelves here. I hope to read some of them next year. Because the new year is just around the corner.

message 108: by Karina (new)

Karina | 1069 comments Joining this cramathon late. I need to read three more books to complete my goal of 40 books off my TBR list. I just started 38 right now. I have three books to get to 75 (or 4 since Goodreads got rid of my Victorian's as a book). I don't think I am going to finish my alphabet goal. As long as I get my TBR goal finished, I will be happy since I've failed that goal the past two years and I will not fail this year!
The books I want to read (and some of these are library books!)
No Exit by Taylor Adams (TBR)
Here's to Us by Elin Hilderbrand (TBR and Letter H)
Vacationland by John Hodgman (TBR and Letter V)
Gilead by Marilynne Robinson (TBR)
We're Going to Need More Line by Gabrielle Union (library book)
Watchmen by Alan Moore (library book)
2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clark (library book)

I just bought the 2 books last week. Definitely want to read them early on in 2020. The covers are so beautiful, I had to own them.

I will finally finish reading Of Blood and Bone (Chronicles of The One, #2) by Nora Roberts today. And I will finish listening to White Trash Zombie Apocalypse (White Trash Zombie, #3) by Diana Rowland which I started on Saturday. Haven't picked up China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians, #2) by Kevin Kwan since last week. :/

They are gorgeous. I haven’t read any further yet. Being sick last week put me woefully behind on writing work and taking so long to finish Good Omens didn’t help my reading goals. I need to make serious progress on my writing goals today and then hopefully get a bit more reading done later.

message 112: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I managed to finish a Christmas book earlier today, a novella set in the Victorian era. Now I'm reading another one of the New books I had checked out the other week from the library. Hope to make more progress on it this evening. It's a very interesting story too!

A Christmas Hope by Anne Perry

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

I say count it anyway! Goodreads is a platform for socialization and record keeping, not an arbiter of what is and is not 'good enough' to count as reading.

message 115: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I got another 40 pages in 1812 The War That Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman during breaks at work. I was hoping to get more tonight but my allergy eyes say that I am going to take Benadryl and go have a coma instead, lol.

I finished reading Of Blood and Bone (Chronicles of The One, #2) by Nora Roberts last night and starting reading New Corpse In Town (Secret Seal Isle Mysteries, #1) by Lucy Quinn this morning for my Q author and my 100th RYS book!
I'll start listening to The Rise of Magicks (Chronicles of The One, #3) by Nora Roberts later today!
I also read about 50 pages of China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians, #2) by Kevin Kwan last night, woot!

Definitely going to count it, just need to read that fourth so the challenge is "complete" on the site... so annoying!!

message 119: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Yesterday I read up to page 212 on The Twisted Ones. Hopefully I should finish it later today but I do have yoga class to go to. And it's super cold outside right now! It's like -14 wind chills!

Why is GR getting rid of books? Are they like really old books from the 1800s or something, like rare? Or what? Are they ebooks? I know there are books out there that only 1 person might have read.

I once saw on somebody's book page that the person read a book that had 1 page. I admit I don't understand that. How can a book have 1 page? Even a picture book has more than I page...?

The books they've removed are apparently not considered "books," they're considered podcasts and therefore don't belong on Goodreads. They're usually Audible Originals that Audible gives to members every month. And it's a bunch of bull.

And "1 page" books are probably web stories. If it's not an audio format, Goodreads requires page count.

message 122: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Oh...I've heard of podcasts (the term) but I don't really know what they are. Maybe I've listened to some but didn't know they were podcasts. Hmm....I see now what the "one page book" can be now. It never occurred to me that the "one page" might be online and that it might be something like 50,000 words! Makes me think of some stuff I've read in the past years ago on fanfiction.net that was like novel length almost but was one chapter, hence it would be "one page". I guess I just automatically still think of paper based books when I see the word "book" and not stuff online.

But thanks for explaining it! 😀 I never would have thought of that. I need to remember that people read books online these days.

I did not get anything read yet today...well maybe like 5 pages before yoga class. But I had a nice time walking there too.

Hopefully today I can finish The Twisted Ones.

Sarah B | 391 comments Well I just finished The Twisted Ones.. excellent creepy story! A weird noise came from somewhere while I was reading and I jumped! Haha.

Podcasts are basically radio shows. I don't listen to them because that would take away time from reading and I can't log podcasts as books. lol.

message 126: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments Thanks for explaining it, Elyse! I think I have listened to a few podcasts on YouTube. Just never realized they were podcasts. I often like to watch YouTube when I eat. It's a nice little break between reading.

I'm starting the Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg now. It's my book club book so I need to read it and then write in the journal.

message 127: by Shelby (new)

Shelby Suderman | 2181 comments I carved out some time for reading today, and managed to get to page 50 in Girls of Paper and Fire (Girls of Paper and Fire #1) by Natasha Ngan .

I took the night off, yesterday was so busy at work, to just watch some TV. I caught up and finished The Masked Singer so that was fun.
I am about 30% through New Corpse In Town (Secret Seal Isle Mysteries, #1) by Lucy Quinn . It's just a fluffy little cozy mystery.
I'm about 25% through The Rise of Magicks (Chronicles of The One, #3) by Nora Roberts . It's all coming together!
I'm on page 150 of China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians, #2) by Kevin Kwan . A little slow going.

message 129: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I felt exhausted yesterday after I got home so I ended up going to bed. Today I managed to get up to page 90 in The Red Address Book.. it's hard to read for me as it's too sad. I probably should not be reading this but I'm supposed to write in the journal about it...

message 130: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments As things get busier at work (and we're nearly at Holiday peak- fun, but exhausting!) my reading has slowed down. I'm about 20 pages away from finishing 1812 The War That Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman , so that will get finished with that today.

Juli | 1933 comments Mod
Ok, since my last update, I finished Otherworld, Planet of the Apes, Sharp Objects, and The Sweethearts' Knitting Club. I listened to The Rise of Magicks but feel I missed a lot, so I will start over with a print book. I am still waiting on my library copy of Red Dragon to come through. I really hope it'll happen before the end of the year.

message 132: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 1945 comments I finished 1812 The War That Forged a Nation by Walter R. Borneman , so I've officially beaten my RYS challenge for the year (by one book, but that's still "beaten", lol)

message 133: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I've so far 123 pages of Diabhal by Kathleen Kaufman. I hope to maybe read more yet tonight before I call it quits.

I made really decent progress with The Rise of Magicks. I'm really enjoying the story.

message 136: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I'm hoping to finish Diabhal this morning and after that I'll start on The graveyard Book by Gaiman. I'll read the other Gaiman book after Christmas but before New Year's.

Oh and I'm done with the Red Address Book. It's giving me too much stress to read it and it's just way, way too sad for me. It's only reminding me of how my mother died a bit over a year ago...and that was very hard. And the stuff that went on before she died.

I had a busy weekend so I didn't finish anymore books but I'm about 65% through New Corpse In Town (Secret Seal Isle Mysteries, #1) by Lucy Quinn , 50% through The Rise of Magicks (Chronicles of The One, #3) by Nora Roberts , and 200 pages in China Rich Girlfriend (Crazy Rich Asians, #2) by Kevin Kwan . Besides these 3, I have 2 e-books and 1 physical book to read in 8 days.

message 149: by Karina (new)

Karina | 1069 comments I haven't gotten a lot of reading done over my weekend away, but I did finish No Exit before I left on my trip and finished We're Going to Need More Wine by Gabrielle Union this morning. I cracked open Here's to Us by Elin Hilderbrand which I am hoping will be a quick read. I am however sucked into a documentary on Netflix called "Don't F*ck with Cats" so it's taking away some of my reading time but I regret nothing!

message 150: by Sarah (new)

Sarah B | 391 comments I'm.on page 82 of Tinfoil Butterfly by Rachel Eve Moulton. The little boy in here is scary!! Demented.

I went out to the ranch this morning. And I was walking across a rectangle piece of ice and the ice broke. I ended up in icy water halfway to my knees!! Spent nearly in hour wearing soaked boots. I think they will take days to dry out. Luckily it wasn't too cold, hence the weak ice. I never was in that pasture before so had no idea the strip of water was so deep!! 🐎🐎🐎 But I gave everyone in the herd a Christmas gift. 😁
