ABANDONED. Fantasy/Sci Fi journey book in a desert with "gods", in human form

Thank you for taking the time to read. This was a book I read over a decade ago and recently resurfaced in a dream.

The books main character is a young boy (adolescence mid teens perhaps). He is journey with a nomadic like village and I remember part of the story being in a village. Circus type of movements, around different areas in the world.

This book may have been a series im not sure?

I also recall a very large huge character, large in the belly and strong in his magical skills. He was one of the main characters mentors.

Another memory I have is of the ending of the story when he climbs stairs of light to embody his divine self. This I remember for certain at the end of the book.
