I enjoyed this, and might read the next book in the series when I have time. I wasn't hugely surprised at the solution to the mystery - I'd already suspected that Mme Anchou was a man - but Beattie's fate, which essentially came down to transportation, was a surprise. (Though it did make more sense than the impression that Simpson, Will and Sarah had actually killed him.)

I didn't mind the historical bits, and felt that the author did a nice job blending fact with character development. The mystery itself was both rather over-complicated and uncompelling, but there was a story worth reading, nonetheless.
