Natalie (nataliemc) | 6 comments Spoilers. Read a couple years ago from public library. Heroine is red haired, named Amaryllis. She was a rich young woman in London, about to be married. Her father (maybe a baronet, or something?) runs away to America. She is left penniless, ends up teaching in her own school. Main story starts after she has been teaching several years. Has a woman companion who quotes Scripture constantly.

She has a gentleman bring his young daughter to her school. Daughter is also red haired. Gentlemen was injured in war, has weakness in one arm. Very proud. They fall in love.

There is a side story where a strange Spanish man keeps spying on heroine and gentleman...ends up that his daughter was married to the gentleman with the weak arm. (the red haired daughter is spanish girls daughter, but not gentlemans daughter.
He is raising her as his own) Spanish spying man kidnaps them in middle, they get away.

I believe title was something to do with the spying man.

Fyi, an alternate title of Amber's suggestion is Amaryllis by M.C. Beaton a.k.a. Marion Chesney.

Natalie (nataliemc) | 6 comments Actually no, I've looked at that description and it's not it. Same name for heroine, but in the one I'm looking for she ends up teaching at a school...actually running the school. And the story starts when she's been teaching for a few years, although she's still young.
