Have you read Jonathan Carroll's Sleeping in Flame? For some reason, it came to mind when I read your post. Has a bit of fantasy/magic. Also, Robert Girardi's The Pirate's Daughter? You might also like my book if you like a thought-provoking journey with a plot lines including mental illness and tumultuous relationships with politics thrown in...
