Thanks for setting this up, Bob. I like the new challenges.
This looks fabulous. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this.This is probably a silly question, but can the same book be used across multiple challenges? Can the same book be used in one of the buffet challenges and the bingo challenge?
I like the challenges. I’m only do my women’s century challenge but am filing these for the following year when I transition to more fiction, less nonfiction.

Yes, a book can be used for multiple challenges. Bingo and Challenge #4 could have lots of books in common. You will find that early on a book could fit almost of the challenges. As time goes by selection becomes more difficult.

I hope you enjoy it. Bingo and Challenge #4 both have a non-fiction choice and there is a top 10 list of non-fiction books for your birth year. No need to give up all of your non-fiction.
I would except I’m focusing on Pulitzer winners next year and even if I read the three from my birth year that’s only three. Maybe I’ll do challenge 4 but when I sign up for too many I find I don’t do any of them.

Remember use your challenges as a tool for your benefit. They are list of books you are interested in reading. Nothing says you have to read them, don't let a challenge become a chore or a burden.

I know. Reading is my escape. So two challenges is enough and then I fill in the rest of the year with books of choice. I might do the short stories also. It will definitely be a fun year.

You are welcome. Create your own thread, look above, check the third paragraph under General/Helpful Challenge Information. Then list the challenges you want to try, be sure to save a few posts if you are going to do more than one challenge. Good luck have fun!

Sorry to be so dense, but I'm a bit confused. I have started lists for two challenges:
A-Z Authors
A-Z Titles
I would need two separate threads for them.
Where am I putting them?
Also i don't understand the other 6 challenges at all.
What do I do? Do you have templates or rules for them? That would help tremendously.

Yes, pick any and all challenges you wish to participate in and have fun. If you don't already have a Bingo challenge it is not to late for that either.

Hi Irphen, go for the Bingo too - you can use the same books as in the other challenges, you might surprise yourself! :)

Haha, thanks for believing in me but I'm afraid it really would be asking to much of myself. But I will take a look at it in any case and maybe I will be foolish enough to try the Bingo challenge as well! XD

I have a question about the Challenge #1, which is right up my alley as I love both classics and contemporary lit.I joined the Classics Group last December but haven't opted for this challenge, concentrating instead on the Bingo. Now I have regrets about it... Can I join this Buffet Challenge #1 now? If not, I hope it will be offered next year. If yes, then I wonder if I can include some of the books I've already read this year. Just checking because I am relatively new here and don't want to violate the group rules.

I believe joining late only really affects the first challenge, Old & New. Here's a breakdown of what changes from the challenge's discussion section:
"For New Members joining in 2020, in addition to the above rules, feel free to adjust your challenge according to the number of months left in the year. Example: If you join in March 20[20] and wish to participate, list 9 books and 2 alternates. If you[] joined after June 2020 list the appropriate number of books according to the number of months left, but only pick one alternate."
Thank you, Aubrey. I saw that about new members in 2020, but I joined in late December 2019, not in 2020, and that's why I was wondering for challenge #1. It sounds I am too late for it.

It sounds I am too late for it."I think the assumption is that you would start the challenge as soon as you joined, which not everyone does. I don't see why you couldn't do a similar adjustment in the case of holding off on entering the challenge on a later date.

I really like this buffet challenge #1 and, if I understand the rules correctly, will be joining with 8 books and 2 alternates. (I was only by c.10 days shy of a 2020 membership :-))

aI have a few questions. First, Do we need to use different books for each challenge, or can we double up if it counts for more than one thing? Second, it says, "If you joined after June 2020 list the appropriate number of books according to the number of months left, but only pick one alternate" for the first challenge. After what date in June? June 1st? June 15th? June 30th?
Third, only the first challenge seems to be affected by the date joined for the challenge buffet. However, I know I won't be able to read all of the books for the challenges that I am interested in if I am still required to read all of them. Am I allowed to adjust the other challenges in a similar way? For example, if I was signing up for challenge two, I would select ten books, four from my birth year, and six from 100 years earlier. I would then read three from 100 years before the year I was born and two from my birth year as I feel this would make it more challenging than doing it the other way. Although perhaps it would be a good idea to select four from 100 years before I was born, four from the year I was born, and two from 50 or 200 years before I was born. Whichever, people in this group feel is best. I was born in 1997, so I'm sure I would be able to find at least a couple I would be interested in that were originally published in 1797. No matter what way I did it, I would read half the amount of books that were selected just as someone who had joined at the start would have.
Fourth, it says in challenge number one to "remember to add your two alternates to any challenge you set up", but I wasn't able to find any other challenges that required alternates in this way. While some like challenge number 2 have you select a certain amount and read half, I can't find any that require the type of alternate found in challenge number 1. Does challenge actually mean thread? This seems especially likely considering a Mod said that challenge number one is "the only challenge we have that shouldn't be changed. That's why it has two alternates". This statement can be found in message 15 of Challenge #4.
I apologize for my confusion and all of the questions. I just joined this group yesterday, and I haven't even used Goodreads much except for in the last two to three weeks. I, therefore, have little experience to go off of. I do know how to create a thread, though! I mention this as I don't want anybody to grow concerned about the fact that I may not know how to do so. I know that many newbies seem to take a while to learn how to do this. The reason I know how to do this is likely due to growing up with computers.

One, you do not need to use different books for each challenge. If you can come up with a book that can work in all nine challenges, use it. You can use it in Bingo also if you are participating.
Two, June is the halfway point of the year. I felt it fair to allow new members the chance to participate without the pressure of having to complete 12 total books. If someone joins in March, they can pick nine books and two alternates. If one joins in August, they can pick 4 books and one alternate.
Three, Keep in mind that these challenge are entirely for fun and sharing. I don’t want anything to be restrictive, except challenge #1. If a challenge states to read 10 or 12 books during the whole year and you joined in June, cut the number in half. Just let others know what you are doing. Example, A-Z challenge, you can say something like, since I joined the group in June, I will consider my A-Z challenge a success if I complete 13 of the 26 letters of the alphabet.
Four, the reason alternates are allowed in challenge #1 is because it is the only challenge where the books to be read are listed prior to the start of the challenge. The challenge is a success when one reads 12 books by the years end. Since they are honor bound to not change their selections, alternates are selected in case a selected book is disliked and abandoned. For all other challenges, any book preselected can be changed at will. If you plan on reading book “A” for your genre challenge, but read book “B” instead, it’s OK.
Ask all the questions you want. This group exists so that hopefully members learn from one another and have fun.

General/Helpful Challenge Information:
These challenges are personal. It is important that you enjoy your challenge/s, don't feel pressure to finish, this is for fun. Use your own creativity to make your challenge special. Select books that you truly have an interest in reading. Perhaps some of your selections can be from different countries. Or select different regions from a single country. Perhaps choose men and women from one country, but from different ethnic or social back grounds. Your challenge your choice, just stick to the basic challenge configuration.
Create your own separate thread to list the challenge/s you wish to participate in. If you plan on participating in several challenges, you will want to save/reserve several message/posts at the beginning of your thread to list each challenge you intend to try. Reserve 1-10 if you are going to try them all. See Example/Sample Thread.
To Create your challenge thread simply go to the top of this folder click on the title (Challenge Buffet). Then look to the right for the words (new topic), click that, a new screen will open. In the box (topic) type the name you wish to give your challenge. In the (comment) box list your books chosen for the challenge. Use the (add book/author) link so that others can link to your choices and learn more about the book you have selected.
Feel free to mark your finished books anyway you wish. After you have finished a book your can strike it off your list. Directions are listed at the top of the comment box (some html is ok). You can list the date you finished or add the number of stars you though the book deserved.
