Thanks!"I am about 25% through the book: John Halifax, Gentleman, by Dinah Maria Mulock Craik, and so far I am enjoying it. The main character always strives to do the right thing. Craik is a Victorian author, and I believe this book was written in the 1850s

As the Ottoman Empire extended that far, well into the 20th century, Bulgarian, Serbian, Bosnian and Albanian authors have a lot to say about it. Some of these books are on the list of the "1001 books you must read before you die".
I can also recommend you a Hungarian classic, The Man with the Golden Touch, most of which is set on the borded between Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, and it has two Muslim characters. You can check out my review about it.

Anne of Green Gables is one of my favorite classics of all time. I love Lucy Maud Montgomery's lush prose and rich storytelling. If you have already read the Anne series, I would recommend Emily of New Moon, The Story Girl, and Magic for Marigold.
