KSMary | 1181 comments I think Suite Française by Irène Némirovsky was originally published in French for Book 1?

message 52: by Mindi (new)

Mindi (gows33) | 47 comments Hi! I want to make sure this book is OK, since this is the exact edition I will be reading, and there isn't a lot of information on the Goodreads page. Verne wrote the original stories in French. Thanks!

Jules Verne Four Novels

I'm sure that is ok, but to make it easy on the moderators if you could find this edition on Amazon or some other source that lists a translator and provide a link to that one as well as the copy you are reading it might make their job easier when they check your post.

The GoodReads link lists a translator which is all the information you need, so have at it.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 4447 comments Please verify this qualifies for Book 1
The Old Man Who Read Love Stories
In the description it states "Translated by Peter Bush" - so I'm assuming it was originally written in Spanish.

If the edition you use does not indicate a translator, please provide an additional link to a site that does to make it easier for the moderators to confirm.

Andy .. not sure which edition will arrive from the library (though I know I am NOT planning to read it in Spanish ...)
Here's a link to the Amazon "hardcover" that clearly shows Peter Bush as the translator
http://www.amazon.com/Old-Man-Read-Lo...

The description for the Paperback edition on amazon indicates that it won Spain's Juan Tigre prize. Another indication it was written in Spanish.

Thanks, will do!

Ms.soule (mrssoule) Great task Andy! These are the books I've picked - are they okay?

Angel **Book Junkie** Can you please verify both Les Miserables(French) and The Girl Who Was the Little Bird (Japanese) also pls. verify no children on the main page. Thanks

Angel, the Les Mis version you linked to is a 48 page illustration version. Did you perhaps mean to link to this version? Les Misérables (I'm planning to use it also, so I would like a "no childrens" verification as well. Thanks!)

Angel **Book Junkie** yeah I linked the wrong one

Andy Plonka (plonkaac) | 4207 comments Angel **Book Junkie** wrote: "Can you please verify both Les Miserables(French) and The Girl Who Was the Little Bird (Japanese) also pls. verify no children on the main page. Thanks"
For the Les Mis Title, the book is ok, but the edition is not, and be sure and get the unabridged version, because I don't think abridged books are permitted (though you might check with a moderator to be sure). I doubt children's is an option since volume I of an unabridged version is over 500 pages.
As for the other, since there are no genre classifications, I can't really verify no children. I don't know how to deal with that one, so check with a moderator.

message 67: by Christine (new)

Christine | 917 comments My concern is that GR users may shelve Les Mis as "children" since there are children as main characters and there is a child on the cover of some editions (although it is clearly not a book intended for children) which can create problems for challenge players if those errant genre shelves pop up on the book's main page because adult books do not appear in AR Bookfinder. I did see that SRC moderators have created a new thread for the Winter Challenge to create Children's genre "exemptions" for these types of situations when they occur, but it seems to easier to address it beforehand. I understand, though, that this might be more of a mod function than a task creator function, so I took it the genre verification thread. Thanks!

Angel, "no children's" has been verified for Les Mis in the genre verification thread here.

so I assume Les Mis is goo to go , as for Angel's Japanese book better check with a moderator on that one as no genres are currently listed.

Victoria (vicki_c) Are short story collections okay for this? (Sorry, it's my first challenge and I haven't noticed this question anywhere yet). I'm thinking about this for #2: Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman, translated from Japanese.

That is fine. In general anthologies of short stories are fine as long as they meet the page requirement which if not specified (as it is not for this task) is 100 pages

It works, of course, but you might add an additional link to a book where a translator is mentioned to make it easier on the moderators.

As with every system there are plenty of flaws.

Yes it works , but to be consistent, please provide an additional link to a copy that lists a translator .

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Hi Andy!! Could I get this book approved for option 1 please Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. Although it is set in China and the characters are Chinese, and the author is Chinese.... I read in the GR author profile that this was his first book and that he writes his books in French.

Thanks! I requested a GR librarian to add the translator to the GR page, so all should be good now.

Sorry, I had to limit the languages for the second book because it made it too complicated for the moderators.
