At least it was short!

message 105: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments Even being short was no redemption for this one.

Janice (jamasc) | 60047 comments Bother!

message 107: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Maybe there was a typo. It should have said "tour de farce" instead of tour de force on the write up for FP.

message 108: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments That would make more sense. i read The Sense of an Ending and really liked it, so I was kind of surprised by my disappointment with this one.
I haven't read Madame Bovary but I know the basic story. After reading this book, which went on and on (and on) about Flaubert's life -- the minutia about the people who crossed his path (with dates), the references to animals (several pages, and he's a bear by the way), the trains he took (with dates), his philosophies, the damn parrots and more, I don't want to read anything by Flaubert. I found that I didn't like any of the characters in the book -- not Flaubert nor the narrator. I just didn't care. But there are many 5 star reviews for this one. Maybe I'm not sophisticated enough for it. Also I found that some of the words used in the writing of the book, weren't in the dictionary. That did it for me.

message 109: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I think I read Madam B a long time ago, but can’t remember. I have not anything by Barnes yet though. Remember, Madam B was written by Flaubert but FP was written by Barnes about Flaubert. I think most of the Booker Prize books are tough to like.

message 110: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments I don't always write reviews but I did on this one. Maybe one day when I get the bad taste of FP out of my mouth, I'll give Madam B a go, but not for a very long time.

message 111: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hehehe, she is not high on my list of need to reads either.

I had tried to listen to this book earlier in the year but I guess the Russian names and vocabulary threw me and I couldn't keep everyone and everything straight. Reading it was much better. So glad I didn't completely abandon this one. I enjoyed the story and the characters. I'm going to have to continue with the series and plan on reading #2 before too long.

I found the story uncomfortable and disturbing, probably because we are in the middle of a pandemic now and there are too many unanswered questions in real life.

I think Christina Henry's work tends to be disturbing. I've read a couple of her books, including Girl in Red.
