Sorry about that Janice. I made the change. I'm going a little stir crazy here shut in the house.

Janice (jamasc) | 60050 comments No problem. It's a tiny mistake. We're all in the same pot, stirring the same crazy. :)

Okay, interesting but very sad. So much was unknown or dismissed concerning postpartum depression and female hormones during the time the novel took place. Not really that long ago (1970s).

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments The last Maisie Dobbs book I read had a doctor that specialized in "female" issues and briefly mentioned emotional issues associated with having a baby. The book was set in 1940, although it was written in 2004. I do not think they knew about hormones, but at least emotional disorders were accounted for, although most of the time, the women were put into mental hospitals.

I think I will not add your title to my "possibilities" list. I already have 9 titles listed for the same card and task. O.o

message 65: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments I think the only reason I read Between Here and April was because it was available for Kindle through my library and came available when I was ready to read a book for the task. Most of the other choices were print and my library is closed.

This is the memoir of a Francoise Frenkel who opened a bookstore in Berlin selling French books in the 1930s. It's the story of her experiences staying one step ahead of the Nazis and their allies in France while trying to escape to Switzerland. Most of the autobiographical books I've read that were written by survivors are moving but not well written. This one is better written than most.

8. Specifications

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I've read other Sue Monk Kidd books and enjoyed them as well. I thought the novel would be too religious for my liking but I was wrong. The author portrayed Jesus the man and not the religious leader he would become. The book is really the story about his fictional wife, Ana, giving a glimpse of a woman's life during that time in history. It's about how this woman found her voice in a time when women had none.

Janice (jamasc) | 60050 comments I can't decide if I should give this book priority and read it soon or leave it on my wishlist. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it.

message 75: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4547 comments I really read it because I wanted to read more books published in 2020, a promise I made myself last year because when it comes to the Goodreads awards I find I haven't read any of the books in the genres I like. It just happened that it fit one of the Trivia categories. I'm not a religious person and shy away from books that deal with religious topics. But I like the author. I have to admit that most of the way through I was leaning toward 3 stars but as the story progressed I liked the portrayal of the women in the story more and more. It isn't really about religion and Jesus. It's truly a about the women of the time and Ana's (and others') search for their voice during a time when women were basically invisible. I liked that. Whenever you read it, I'd like to know what you think. It would make a good book for a discussion too.

message 76: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60050 comments I've been doing the same strategy for the last few years in an attempt to read some of the books that appear in the Goodreads awards. It really does intrigue me so I'll try to get to it sometime this year.

It makes me think of The Red Tent. Have you read that book?

message 77: by Roz (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I did not feel that The Red Tent was really a religious book, but more about the women's story. I really liked it.

I might move Kidd's book up on my reading list. I have not done the stars on the cover task yet.
