Five stars for this classic Steinbeck story is not close to enough.
I want to thank Sandra for getting me to finally read it.

I had planned to read a book I have owned for a long time, North To The Night: A Spiritual Odyssey In The Arctic. I will get to it yet.

I caught the end of the Burnes documentary once, and that is what made me want to read the book.

Oh, that makes me feel so much better, Anne. I thought I was practically the last one in the world to have never read this series. I have owned a beautiful hard copy volume of The Vampire Chronicles for years and years. I cannot find the exact book in GR, but it has multiple stories and gold edged pages. There are over 1200 pages in it and it weighs about 10 pounds. I was so thrilled when I found out that Simon Vance had narrated the stories (I do not know how many, nor how many my library has, but at least the first four.)

Sorry Cherie, but in the discussion we were having about maps on the cover, you asked about masks and I said, "I don't see any masks...." This cover, in my opinion, doesn't show a mask. It shows a man in silhouette - you can't determine facial features or clothing features. You can't tell if he's wearing a mask or not. I'm going to disallow it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Okay - I can live with it. I had planned to read The Hamlet Trap (Constance and Charlie, #1) by Kate Wilhelm anyway..

Thanks, Roz.
I got that question right (don't ask me how I knew the correct answer - I probably guessed, given the choices), so I had the task for "the book is set on the moon", which I have already completed.
I looked for maps yesterday, but trawling through all 360 tasks was tedious. I could have copy and pasted all of them into my spread sheet to use the search function, but I decided against it.

I need to get my youngest daughter to listen to this book. She will laugh herself silly in a few parts. This woman is amazing. She narrated her own book, which was well written. She did not have a great voice for it, but she can say "fuck, fuck, fuck" with the best of them. Her story was pretty graphic in places and she comes across as one. tough. woman.

Thank you, Janice. I probably would not have found it nor listened to it, if I had not been so determined to not read a book with Fudge in the title.

Jenn - it was okay. Not great, not a disaster. I rolled my eyes a couple of times, but I did not want to throw it against the wall. I am hoping it might become a more interesting story line in the next book, which I will listen to over the weekend. Very YA. The audiobook narrators did a nice job carrying the main characters who are supposed to be fifteen years old.

I liked the second book better than the first. At least the author finally gave some background on the world situation and what was going on between the waring factions in North America. A very emotional ending. I have the third book ready to listen to for Card 6, History-Nay.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Janice - before I try to post this for Card 20, Geography-Yay (Cover has a unicorn or any horned animal), I want to run it by you first. This is the cover of the book that I listened to over the weekend. Dragonslayer (Dragonslayer, #1) by Duncan M. Hamilton . I agree that it is not absolutely clear on the cover but this is from the text: "The creature was huge. It was covered in polished black scales. It stood on four limbs. Poised on a long neck extending from muscular shoulders, it's head resembled the shape of a dogs with an elongated snout containing an array of razor sharp teeth. A small horn rose at the tip of it's nose between two large nostrils. It had a pair of horns on the crown of it's head that curved backwards into wicked points.

It was an excellent 1st-in-series book, and I loved the story. It is very new.

They were using cell phones, pretty sophisticated apps on the iPad to map the area, and satellite phones. I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that it's set in the last 10 years.

I was not enamored with the series going into this third book, but I was committed because I had worked all of the books (currently four) into my challenge. This book has made a difference, but in all honesty, she could have quit here. She really put a good story together in this installment. My earbuds were glued into my ears all of the way to the ending!

I bumped Steve Martin's book, An Object of Beauty again!
