I belong to several but am active in just a few. My participation depends on what I'm reading or other activity in the group.

What has you decide to join a group? What causes you to participate? What would cause you to leave or stop participating?

Kris (My Novelesque Life) (mynovelesquelife) I'm new to GR groups so I'm only in a few right now. I look at what I'm reading so that I can participate - ie there are some genre I read constantly like mystery and others like fantasy I read once in awhile. I look at how active they are and what they discuss and past group/buddy reads. Another factor is if my friends are in the group and groups they suggest.

I tend to leave when conversation dwindles or I don't feel like my participation doesn't matter. I

Vi ~ Inkvotary (inkvotary) | 126 comments I belong to several groups - but I´m not active in all of them. The groups I´m in show my interest in books and authors. I joined some groups ´cause my friends are in them or they recommended them to me. Since I´m still kind of new to GR I havn´t really figured out yet, in which group I wanna stay on long term view (except for the NR-Group and Audiobook Challenge - in both I feel a great atmosphere and I love just reading them or to participate ).
But I know, that I will leave or stop participating, if a group is only writing sentences which are only build with short cuts - that´s no way of discussing books in my eyes. I´m not against the use of short cuts at all, they say sometimes more than the complete words can, but when I discuss a book or the style of an author with real interest, when the discussion matters to the ones who participate, then, I believe say a few well placed words a lot more than short cuts...

I've just gone through a purge of my groups, eliminating any where I'm just not participating or connecting to.

Janeiowa I don't understand what the term "short cuts" means in reference to a book discussion. Would someone explain or give an example?

I believe Vi means abbreviations, similar to those you'd see in text messages.

Janeiowa The "O I C " kind of thing?

I haven't seen that yet in the few comments I've seen about a monthly book read, and I can see how annoying it would be.

To date, I really haven't found what I'd call a discussion of any book. I've found some random one or two line comments about liking this or that book or character, but that's been the extent of it. I guess I'm not looking in the right groups.

Anita (anitanodiva) | 1488 comments We came close to a discussion on a Nora Roberts book sometime last year, but, yeah, I haven't seen much you would class as discussion either. But, these books are not exactly rife with deep, hidden meanings.

I started on Shelfari and became accustomed to more formal book discussions (prepared discussion questions of at least 10 or more). This approach doesn't seem to be real popular on Goodreads, primarily because of the absence of nested conversations.

FYI, I started a group here called the 2-3-4 Challenge group, primarily focused on tackling series on your TBR shelf but also to buddy up and have book discussions. We've already got one in progress and I'm working on the questions for another right now. We've got many more planned.

Here's a link to one of the book discussions. If you're interested in this type format, let me know.

Hi, yes, I was talking about abbreviations (thanks, I learned something new).

Jennifer, Just beyond normal ♑ (jenniferjustbeyondnormal) I am part of four groups and at times that feels overwhelming. But I think the four I am in now work for me.

It’s smart to start with fewer, Jennifer. I’m in more than I’d like but only highly active in a few. And, each group fits a need.
