Can't remember the title or author of a certain book? Wonder if a book has more than one cover or a different edition? Aren't sure about a historic term or phrase in a book? Or...any question related to Austen's books and those inspired by her or her books. Challengers feel free to offer up questions and field each other's answers.

Angela Quarles (angelaquarles) | 3 comments Would a book count that has the main POV character reading a JA book, and quotes from them etc?

Hi Angela! Good question! This is all just for fun and a way to work through the books that focus on a specific theme that are on our shelves so its a go with your 'gut' and there will be no judgement on my part. ;)
For one Austenesque challenge I did, I counted a book that had a book club reading and discussing P&P because I felt it was a strong enough influence of Austen to it. Obviously the character for your story is influenced strongly by JA if they're quoting her a lot.

Thanks! So it's okay to add it to the shelf?

Sure! Just put the explanation in the box when it comes up so people can see why its an add (quotes Austen and reads her books etc)

Barb (barblibrarian1) There have recently been discussions on my favorite JAFF boards about plagiarism taking place with readers of the boards publishing other author's stories on Amazon before the real author is ready to publish. No one is naming names, which I understand. However, as a reader - I want names! Which books should I be avoiding on Amazon or have they all been removed?

Thanks

Whoa! That's awful. And a good question, Barbara. Maybe others here in the group will know the answer to that one. I haven't heard any specific names, but I'll keep my eyes open.

message 8: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Lynne | 12 comments Barb, I'm pretty sure they have been removed. I do not know the names of the thieves, but in at least one instance they used the true author's name, Maxine Brown.

message 9: by Barb (new)

Barb (barblibrarian1) Well - I feel better knowing I didn't buy anything from them, but I know I read one I borrowed from Kindle Unlimited that sounded familiar. This is just awful for the JAFF authors. Monica, what do you feel about authors using their real names in the JAFF sites, or do you think authors will just back away from posting?

message 10: by Barb (last edited Aug 07, 2015 08:01PM) (new)

Barb (barblibrarian1) It had to be someone new to JAFF or who didn't even care what it was. They wouldn't realize how quickly word would get out. Thank goodness it did. I will so miss it if some of my favorite authors stop posting. But, I make it a point to try to buy their ebooks after they post if I love the story. So, I guess I will still get their books. The problem is how much fun it is to read with a group and to chat in the comments. I hope people stick around.

Ceri | 233 comments It's so horrible isn't it. I would feel violated if somebody stole one of my reviews, which obviously take just a fraction of the effort somebody would put into writing a story! Plus it just cuts down the amount of people who would be willing to post free online stories, which so many people enjoy. I hope it pushes some of the people who don't fancy publishing towards doing it officially, though, because there are some stories out there which deserve the chance of a wider audience than they could get on a fanfic site.

I saw a list on Facebook of the titles to avoid. As said above I don't think you can buy them now, but you might already have them so it's good to know. I asked the person who posted if I could share their post and I don't think they've replied, so I'll just copy out the titles and edit this post to add them.

Edited to add: I hope the person who posted this doesn't mind that I've shared it:

"A Chance Meeting" by Lis Batten was stolen and published illegally as "Pride and Tribulation: A Jane Austen Fan Fiction" by thief Emma Lee,
"Speak not Againist the Sun." by 4giveMeJane was stolen and published illegally as "Enchanted Hearts" by thief Claire Butler,
"One False Step" by PemberleyFan was stolen and published illegally as "False Pride" by thief Emma Lee,
"A Woman Scorned" by JustMJ was stolen and posted as "Mistress of Pemberley" by thief BronzeWing31340,
"Fair Stands the Wind" and "A New Beginning" by MaxineB were published under their original names and by a thief using the real author's AHA pen name (Maxine B).

message 12: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments That is completely illogical, the stories that they are writing are new and should therefore be protected by copyright, it's as simple as that.

message 13: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Lynne | 12 comments I have not seen any direct criticism of authors removing their stories from other sites, but the language used certainly did not scream support. Meryton Press was informed that one of their author's had a story stolen from AHA and published on Amazon. They got the issue resolved, thankfully, but they did not let the community know it happened. I, for one, am glad I had already pulled my stories from there. I loved the playful interaction on the comment thread, but I have found similar fun in other area of the JAFF world. I am livid on behalf of the authors whose work was stolen. It is up to each author to decide how to best protect their work. Whatever they decide, they should be supported.

message 14: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Lynne | 12 comments As far as I know, MJ hasn't finished it, yet. I hope this doesn't mess with her mojo, because she is a very talented writer. One really good thing that has come from this is seeing the way indie authors look out for each other. The readers are pretty awesome, too. Makes me proud.

Mary | 30 comments Just picked up on this thread now-I can't believe that writers who have put their hearts and souls into writing and posting their beloved stories online have been victims of THIEVES! What is the world coming to when people are willing to post other people's stories as their own? Do they not realise that the readers of these stories will realise they are forgeries??? I'm honestly shocked and grieved indeed.

message 16: by Barb (new)

Barb (barblibrarian1) This just breaks my heart. I can so see it from the author's standpoint, but I just love reading these wonderful stories on JAFF sites.

Well, whatever ends up happening, I will still be buying self-published JAFF. But, if I don't know the author's real name, how can I know the book was published falsely by someone else?

message 17: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments That is what worries me too Barbara, I'd be less likely to take a chance on an unknown author if I can't be sure if they're real or just some thief with a pseudonym! I know some people publish their own work under a pseudonym and that is absolutely their right but how can I tell if it is their work? I think it's particularly tricky in JAFF as because so many of the books are variations of Pride and Prejudice there are bound to be some similarities between some books even if it's entirely unintentional!

message 18: by Kim (new)

Kim (allthelovelypages) | 22 comments Hi everyone, I have challenged myself to read JAFF from A to Z and have most of the titles covered except for Q, X, and Z. If you know of any JAFF titles that start with those letters please let me know! thanks :)

message 19: by Sophia (new)

Sophia (sophiarose) | 757 comments Mod
Hi Kim!

That sounds like a fun challenge. I went through all my Austenesque shelves and I don't have any titles that will help. The closest I found was 'Not Quite Darcy' for the 'Q'.

You can try perusing everyone's virtual shelves that are listed in the Assorted and Sundry Matters section.

Another source you can try might be the JAFF writing websites to see if an unpublished book has a Q,X, or Z title.

message 20: by Kim (new)

Kim (allthelovelypages) | 22 comments Thanks for the ideas Sophia. I might have to settle for titles with one of those letters in it, like you suggested. The rest of the alphabet was easy. Q, X & Z not so much!

Sophia (sophiarose) | 757 comments Mod
Yeah, those are tough ones. I'll keep my eyes open for you.

message 22: by Ceri (new)

Ceri | 233 comments I had a look through my shelves but couldn't find any Q, X or Z books either. There are lots of books that begin with 'Ex..', I'd cheat and use one of those. No idea what to do about the Z though.

message 23: by Kim (new)

Kim (allthelovelypages) | 22 comments I went with "Expecting His Proposal" for X, "Elizabeth Bennet's Deception" for Z and, "Mistaking Her Character" (which is subtitled Queen of Rosings Park, Book 1) for Q. So I've got the whole alphabet covered! Thanks Ceri & Sophia for checking your shelves and for the ideas!

That works, Kim!

Maybe you'll come across something better before you get that far in the alphabet.
