I believe I read this novel in the 1980s. It was a bestseller I thought, or very popular. It was about the influence of an immigrant mother on her grown daughter, told from the daughter's point of view. The mother was an immigrant, from Poland I think, and found she could help support her family by sewing piecework in her home. She worked so hard at this and was so bent on survival and success of her children in the US that she did not have time for her children in day-to-day life and had a distant relationship with her daughter. The book covered many years in its plot, highlighting the mother's life and how the daughter tried to reconcile herself to the relationship. I thought the book had the words "My Mother" in the tile but I haven't been able to locate it with searches on those words or by looking at old bestseller lists.
