Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments #3 - There are a couple Hardcover versions with that cover. Are you saying your edition has that ISBN with a hardcover?

Just checking because everywhere I find that ISBN listed it is for a paperback version.

message 5: by Edwina (new)

Edwina Book Anaconda | 27198 comments Yes, that ISBN with a hardcover.
I actually have both the paperback and hardcover with that same ISBN.
I must stop going to used book stores. LOL
Would you like me to post a picture of the 2 books side by side so you can see the thicker hardback cover?
I don't mind doing that.

Edwina Book Anaconda | 27198 comments Just uploaded 5 pictures to my profile.
Hope you can tell by those that one is a hardback.
It was harder to do than I thought it would be.

Edwina, that hardcover is a library re-bind. Libraries often rebind paperbacks with a reinforced cover to stand up to the rigors of many readings.

It's not really published as a hardcover.

Should I remove that edition, or mark it in someway then?

Since it's not an actual separate publication, it should be removed.

The paperback says Harcourt Brace & Company
The hardback says Harcourt, Inc.
Also small differences in the copyright page.
Can take pictures.

Sounds like different printings of the same book. Are the covers the same?

message 13: by Edwina (new)

Edwina Book Anaconda | 27198 comments Yes except hardback is taller.

Which is because of the library rebind. They are not separate editions; just separate printings. And we only add new editions for those when the cover is different.

Thank you very much, rivka, for explaining all of this to me. I'm still learning how things are done here and I hope that I'm not upsetting anyone with so many requests.

Edwina Book Anaconda | 27198 comments rivka,

The paperback says Harcourt Brace & Company
The hardback says Harcourt, Inc.

None of the books listed use them for the publisher so which book should I mark as the one I have ?

Philip (burnnerman) | 5912 comments So it sounds like I should remove the edition I added.

Doing it now. Done

Those are actually the same company. Publishers merge and change names so often it's hard to keep track.

The publisher listed for the paperback was HMH Books for Young Readers. That's Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, because Houghton Mifflin bought Harcourt in 2007. Since that cannot have been the division under which it was published in 1999, and WorldCat lists Harcourt Brace, I was going to correct it -- but I see another librarian got there already. ;)

Edwina Book Anaconda | 27198 comments Thank you all for the help.
And, again, I'm sorry if anyone gets annoyed by my posts. I might be through (maybe) half of my massive book collection ... should I just give up now or keep striving forward ?
I'm sure I'm going to need a lot more help. :(

Keep 'em coming! Librarians are volunteers, and most love this sort of thing. (The ones that don't fulfill other requests, or don't respond to requests in this group.)

You have been the source of a number of alternate cover editions, as well as uncovering multiple instances of bad cover changes from auto-imports. Your contributions have been invaluable. Just wanted to chime in :)

Edwina Book Anaconda | 27198 comments Thank you Z for your kind words. I'm glad I've done some good here. :)

And rivka ... You asked for it. LOL
Many, many more to come.
