Above is a short article about the art of developing general characters. To sum it all up, characters have to immerse the reader and wow them in the book. In other words, it's great if your character is a Productive Patrick who makes all the right decisions and has an exquisite morale, but then why would you write about Patrick in the first place? If your character is spunky, be sure you know why she's spunky? Is it because she's repulse by the girly agenda of shimmery nail polish and high heels? By strong, do you just mean a rebellious personality? Has she gone through any hardships in her life that has made her the way she was? In one of my stories, one of my MCs jumped from foster home to foster home, which is why SHE's strong. In attitude, a person may be strong because they've had to survive that way in their past life.
Also paint the friends of that person. Is she an outcast, does she have few friends who are opposite/similar to her? Try considering one of these and hopefully you'll figure out where you're going.
