Are you sure you're not thinking of My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult? It's not the main plot, but the father (Brian) is a firefighter and the son, Jesse, "spends most of his time setting fire to abandoned buildings with homemade explosives and using illegal drugs", according to the Wikipedia summary. It is a multi-character narrative, too.
