ABANDONED. Middle-grade/YA book about a teacher who was a witch

Trying to remember a series that I read in the mid-90s, in which children discover that their teacher (or perhaps substitute teacher?) is a witch. One element I remember particularly is that the teacher would use the classroom Bunsen burners for brewing her potions, calling fire and cauldrons outmoded.

US English; possibly published in the 80s, because I think my mother had read it when she was a children's librarian.

My first reaction on reading the description was "no," but then I saw a reference to Pepperdine Academy, and it just... feels right. Quite possibly.
