Hello, my name is David Putnam and I've been an avid reader all my life sometimes reading as many as four books a week (this back when my eyes were young). I have come late to Goodreads and love conversing with those of my tribe. I dwell mostly in mystery and thriller but will read anything that is well written so bring on the recommendations. My all time favorite books are historical: Lonesome Dove tops the list. And of course Pillars of the Earth, Shogun, River God, Centennial....well you get the idea.

Movie is the one that brought me to this wonderful book. Gotta admit movies can be useful in finding new books. :)
I recommend three American novels, all which may be called satires or black comedies. 🙂Wise Blood by Flannery O’Connor
Cat’s Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut
The Mysterious Strange by Mark Twain
@MarkThe Mysterious Stranger is an unfinished work, right? I have never heard about this book by Mark Twain. Only know the popular ones. Shame on me. Thanks though. I will surely try these . :)
My American novel of the year is Mobydick. Took a looong time to finish it but was worthy of every effort.

Yes, it was unfinished. What is read today was cobbled together by his publisher. Bravo on your Moby Dick read! It is a wonderful book. ;)
@ForthencoHi... Always great to find another Indian. :) Is your name inspired from Al Pacino and Halo game? Pardon me if I am wrong. I am just trying to deduce everything like Sherlock. But so far not really great results. ;)
And I love Tolkien, Lovecraft and Neil Gaiman too. Especially Gaiman. But I have yet to read Sandman comics.
Hey Forthenco, can you please suggest great mangas to read? I am a rookie in manga world and only know works of Junji Ito, Inio Asano, Death note and Lone Wolf and Cub. :)

Hi! My name's Elizabeth and I really like to read which is probably why the majority of us are here. My favorite genres are fantasy, mystery, and historical fiction. Occasionally, I enjoy reading a classic because I love trying to figure out what has gravitated people toward that book for generation. I've been studying Spanish for 4 years and want to start reading some books in Spanish, but I don't know where to start. If any of you guys have recommendations, please let me know.

So I started with reading Harry Potter in Spanish. Its easier to start with stories that are familiar to you. I also can recommend reading child books! If you want to read more like novels then I recommend you the author: Carlos Ruiz Zafón. He is one of my absolute favourite authors!!! One of my favourite books of him are the midnight Palace and The watcher in the shadows :)
