YA SCI-FI possibility dystopian

Girl (teen?) travels through mirror (?) to another dimension/time. People she knows are trying to survive on this desolate land. Huge waves/storm of sand (?) sweep over the land regularly and within minutes of each other. The moment the wave/storm stops, the people lie down and immediately fall asleep for a little bit before the next wave/storm comes.

Read in late 2000s, I was in middle school and I think the book was geared to my age group or a little older
