Coralie | 1658 comments I have landed on a transport square and rolled a 9.
9. Read a book with less than 5 ratings (has to be at least 1 year after first publication date).
The only book on my TBR shelf with less than 5 ratings was published in 2019. I have no idea how to find a book to fit this task. Where do I start?

Coralie, I checked your TBR and found that your one book Dignity in a Teacup: True Stories of Courage and Sacrifice from Christmas Island was published February 2019. I would say it would be OK to read it. Or you could wait a week to start it.

Coralie, I'm happy for you to adopt Bea's approach or alternatively, you could read a book from your TBR with the least number of ratings which has been published >1 year ago.

I found it the last time I searched the library for Christmas Island books for RwS (the previous time there were none).

You can widen your shelf to your overall to-read shelf, Amy. There's a note on the Transport that says 'if possible from your bookopoly shelf' so if not possible then it's ok to look at your full to-read shelf. And if you still have nothing, then you can read a book from your TBR with the least number of ratings which has been published >1 year ago.

oh no, Coralie! NSW hasn't really shut anything down :/

Just picked up my boys from school and it's sooo quiet. About 1/4 of children are being kept at home and I'm seriously thinking about this.

All books on my bookopoly shelf are what I've got at home but it is probably an idea to review your bookopoly shelves so you only have books you have immediate access to.

Of course, I'm happy to relax the rules about moving books on/off your bookopoly shelves during rolls and if you find that you are stuck with your current picks due libraries closing etc, feel free to ask for alternate picks (after you've reviewed your shelves please)

Rachel P (rachel_pfoty1997) | 36 comments I know that I am a bit late to the party but I would like to join in if that is still possible. I created a bookopoly shelf with 90 books but I don't know how to link to it if someone could help me out with this that would be great. Also although I think I want to do either the Panama or the Australian board I'm not sure which one. I'm trying to find a main board that would require me to add the least amount of new books possible. I already have over 100 books on my Want to Read shelf and I will likely be adding more as I progress in my Around the World group and take part in my Reading for Pleasure group. If someone could help me decide which main board they think would be best for me that would be most appreciated to. Right now I mostly have books from authors around the world, Christian genre books, and books about animals (mainly dogs). Although being able to look at my bookopoly shelf would likely give even more helpful information. Thanks.

Elvenn | 746 comments Hi Rachel! You can see the sign ups here: Just write your chosen board and paste the link to your Bookopoly shelf. Then go to the top of the "Discussion > Bookopoly - Travel Edition" thread and add a "new topic".

Before choosing a board you should probably check the 5th message in each of the 4 boards, where the shelves are listed, but remember that, as we move around rolling two dice, you may never land on those shelves or land 4 times in 5 days. :)

I chose the UK Board as main board but so far I've only landed on shelves while visiting the Australia Board and even rolled twice the same shelf (Oceania), from which I had to read three books.

message 71: by Meg (new)

Meg (megscl) | 1073 comments Hi Rachel, the easiest way to link to your shelf is just to copy and paste the url, like this :
https://www.goodreads.com/review/list...
People often use HTML to make it look nicer, but it does the same thing.

I've now travelled to 3 of the four boards and I don't think it makes much difference which board you choose. Almost all the rolls just involve you reading something from your Bookopoly shelf.

Thanks for providing me with more information. It is good to have an example of how your main board doesn't neccessarily significantly impact your journey as a whole. I think I will go with Australia as my main board, I just hope that I don't get stuck with too many loveozyas. It's definetly not my favorite genre. I will post there soon.

First a couple of questions though. How do I know if one of my books counts towards a certain board shelf or not? While sometimes it is clear wether a book falls under a certain category or not at other times it isn't neccessarily. For example, would The Man Who Spoke Snakish be classified under translated, europe, mythology, folklore, magical-realism, indigenous, and/or aboriginal?

Second, are there definitions of the board shelves anywhere? While I tried looking at examples in the list to try to figure out what exactly each category entailed this confused me even more at times. For example, I assumed gold meant books about gold mining, gold (as in currency/nuggets), books with the word gold in them, and books on similar topics/with similar attributes. However, when I went in to look at what books were classified under gold I saw books that I didn't understand how they had to do with gold in any way, shape or form. Examples include 1984, The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan, The Host by Stephanie Meyer, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, and The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket. There are other books and categories too that I don't understand.

Thanks for letting me know how to link to my shelf and for reaffirming that it doesn't matter much which is your main shelf.

message 74: by Elvenn (new)

Elvenn | 746 comments Rachel wrote: "First a couple of questions..."

Well, clicking on "loveozya" in the board takes you to a list of books that should fulfill the premise but as the shelves are created by Goodreads out of all the users' shelves, there are no official definitions. Using Gold as an example, someone may create a Gold shelf in their profile and add books about gold mining but other user may create the same shelf and add books with a golden cover, or part of a series where Gold is the main detective, but usually what you find in the shelf has to do with the most popular use of the word.

message 75: by Elvenn (new)

Elvenn | 746 comments Other way of knowing if a book is in a shelf is by clicking on "Genres" or "Top Shelves" (on the right of the book's page) and browsing the list of shelves where the book has been added.

There's also a shortcut: Instead of clicking on Genres you click where it says the number of users and then modify the url.

Using The Man Who Spoke Snakish, as an example, on the right, where it says "Historical > Historical Fiction --- 48 users" you click on "48 users".
Then you modify the url of the page it opens: where it says "shelf/users/25246592-the-man-who-spoke-snakish?shelf=historical-fiction" you replace "historical-fiction" with any shelf, for example "folklore". And when you use this new url , it shows if any user has added that book to the Folklore shelf.

Welcome, Rachel!

And thanks, Elvenn & Meg, for helping out :)

To reiterate, Rachel, the books on your bookopoly shelf do not necessarily have to do with any of the countries of any 4 boards. They are just what you want to read.

With regard to the board's shelves, there are links for each shelf you can click which will take you to popular books which have been shelved in that way. So the easy way is to browse those 25 pages.

Or, as Elvenn has also pointed out, you can browse what shelves the book has been shelved as by clicking on the "See top shelves..." link on the book's page (it's just above the 'about' author, on the right hand side of the page).

Who picked some books for you? Your Mom? If so are you able to read the books she picked and then get back to your bookopoly? I'm confused

@Rachel, I think Jayme is saying that her mum brought over books for her to read.

I am confused, Jayme, as to what you're actually asking. Have you finished reading all the books your mum got for you? So, you don't have anymore books to read?

You can put any books you that you can source that you want to read and/or re-read on your bookopoly shelf to continue to play. OR, if you wish, you can suspend your game until you're ready to play again.

Jayme, you can add any books you like onto the bookopoly shelf and/or if you wish, you can use a different shelf - whichever is easier for you. Just be clear in your book request which shelf the picker should be looking at. I hope that helps.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1281 comments Sorry for the confusion, Elven picked the books for me that I ad with me.

message 87: by Rachel (new)

Rachel P (rachel_pfoty1997) | 36 comments I have a few questions in regards to picking a book for transport squares. While I am not required to complete any of these tasks currently, in case I do, I would like to know the following:

Transport Square followed by a dice roll of a 7
Instructions: Read a new release (within 3 months of you reading)
How are we defining a new release?
Are we including new releases of new editions or just new releases of a book as a whole. For example take Malicroix. While the book was originally published in 1973, an English version wasn't available until April 7th 2020. Is this book and similar books availble for the 7th transport challenge until three weeks after the English edition was published?

Similarily Cursed Luck was available in part starting Mar 27th but the whole thing won't be availble until June 16th. In fact, it won't even be technically be "released" until June 30th which is when an edited version will be available. She has been writing it chapter by chapter during the pandemic and releaseing each chapter as soon as it is complete. How long will this book, and any similar books I may find, be allowed to count towards the transport challenge? Three months after the first chapter was available (June 27th), 3 months after it will completely written (Sept 16th), or three weeks after an edited version will be released (Sept 30th)?

The same is also slightly true of Haben: The Deafblind Woman Who Conquered Harvard Law since the paperback version won't be released until August 11th and can be found here: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...
However, I believe that I already know the answer for this book. That is it won't be formally accepted for the bookopoly challenge.

Transport Square with a second dice roll of a 4
Instructions: Read an award-winning book
How are we defining an award-winning book? If it's on a shortlist or a longlist does that count or does it need to have won something like a caldecott medal?

Transport Square with a second dice roll of a 3
Instructions: Read a debut novel
How are we defining a debut novel? It is simply the first and only book that an author has ever written or does it apply to translators and such too? For example, take Man Tiger. While both Benedict Anderson (introduction) and Eka Kurniawan (author) have other books Labodalih Sembiring (translator) does not. An author is the one to originally come up with the idea for a book and the first to put words down on paper (or another writing surface/space). However, the translator often still has to get permission or come up with a way to publish their work and can have just as much to do with the popularity or failure of a novel as the writer themself. After all a book written in Indonesian which is known by less than 200 million people is far less likely to be popular than a book written in English which is known by more than 1 billion people Finally along the same lines. Does it need to be the only book they have ever written or does it simply need to be the first book that someone has written? How are author's first books categorized in this group if they have only ever written a sequential series?

I may be way over thinking this but my OCD is telling me that I need to do it "right". 🤷🏻‍♀️

message 88: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
LOL - all good, Rachel :)

I'll answer the last 2 first as they're straight forward:
1. Has to have won an award (not longlist or shortlist etc)
2. Debut novel only applies to author's writing (we don't usually look at intros/translators -most reading challenges do not recognise these)

3. New Release: applies only to original publication book so
a. new edition of older books does not fit under this task
b. we rely on first published date as noted on GR (just easier to do this) so use whatever's there whether it's being published per chapter or not
c. I did say 'within' so I guess it could mean before or after... up to you :)

message 89: by Rachel (last edited Jun 14, 2020 06:34PM) (new)

Rachel P (rachel_pfoty1997) | 36 comments Thanks for the clarification Tien. :)

Also, does the name of the place in the title (Transport 5) have to be a city, country or continent or does it just have to be real? There are a few names such as Puka-Puka that and Devils Peak that technically fit the set of instructions but aren't listed in parentheses.
Instructions: Read a book with a name of a place in title (can be city, country, continent etc but has to be real).
Also what are we defining as "real"? Do nonphysical or places whose realness is contested count (Heaven, Hell, Eden, Hades, Tartarus, Naraka, Diyu, etc.)?

Finally, are debut novels counted even if the author has written other books since or only if the book is the only one the author has ever published? For example would Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone be considered the debut novel for J.K. Rowling?

message 90: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9032 comments Mod
Whether author's written 1 or 100 books, first published novel still counts as debut.

Real places is to be one you can point to on the globe. As it's a travel edition, that's what I'm limiting to, however, I'll make exception for places that have been renamed in history (eg. Myanmar vs. Burma, Jakarta vs. Batavia, etc). Both Puka-Puka & Devils Peak are acceptable as technically, you can point to them on the atlas ;)
