I didn't like the series because to me it was basically about two people in obsession with each other that never learned to love. When you love someone, you're supposed to make them a part of your life, not make them your life. And both Bella and Edward didn't get that message nor did they learn from their mistakes, that you can't revolve your entire life around one person. I mostly hate this book series because it's a story of lust and obsession that's trying to sell me it as true love. All of the couples (with the exception of the Cullen couples because they did claim to be soul mates and each entity existed outside of it's coupled pairing) were in a fabrication of love especially the imprint. Bella and Edward's fabrication being obsession and any imprint being the magic behind it. You'll never truly know how much you love someone until you have the free will to decide it.
But what I hate most of all is that this book is targeting teenagers (who's only real experience with romantic love comes from fiction) who think this is what true love is and actually strive for a relationship like Bella and Edward. If you have a relationship like theirs, you are in an abusive relationship because that's what the culmination of their relationship amounted to. If read a pamphlet for abusive relationships the majority of the descriptions will match up with the way Edward treated Bella and that's frightening. Because that took a lot of time for me to catch that and I'm sure it's still taking others even more time to realize.
Weirdly, Jacob was the only character I liked and could see his view point. The only reason he was so intense with Bella is because she made it impossible for him to react otherwise. She made everything life or death so he reacted with the same type of vigor, opting to try and save her life. As for him imprinting on a baby, I can't really fault him for that because that's literally out of his control. I tend to ignore the book series after the imprint, mainly because I could tell Meyer was getting lazy after that. She needed something to wrap her story in a nice HEA bow and did it with Renesmee. After that point in the book characters no long have any depth especially Jacob, half of his character's personality was gone when he imprinted and wolves became irrelevant. She built up character side plots with both Leah and Jacob for them to decentagrate into nothing and irrelevance while the rest of the story went in the same direction.
But back to Jacob, I'm sure had Bella chose neither of them and decided to go to college alone and get her own identity, Jacob would have been the only one to not only respect that but actually move on from her because his entire life didn't revolve around Bella. Edward wouldn't have been able to do that without at least stalking her for a good portion of her life because what else can he do. He has forever and has wrapped that around one human girl who doesn't.
So all in all the series strived for greatness and had the potential to get there, but completely squandered with unhealthy relationships that were never rectified.

I was thinking earlier today about this and I realized: this story had so much potential that could have been shown if it was told in Edward's POV because he was the one that was always protecting Bella.
Sorry this was so long, but comment what you thought about Twilight and why you did or didn't like it!
