When we moved overseas 5 years ago we donated 1,000 books to a charity. Acquired more while we were away, and left many of those behind. Acquired still more while in our first location back in the states, left some of those behind when we moved to our present home this summer. I'd guess that between the two of us we're currently back up to 1,000 (they are commingled to some extent...)
Same with me. We moved to Hawaii in 2008 to take a job with Hawaii Five-O. I had 6k hardcover firsts signed and had to get rid of them. The humidity would have subjected them to a slow death. I'm back in SoCal not and have about 2k books, the vast majority are paperbacks on the TBR pile.d.
Yes,the hardcovers look so good on the shelves, but take up so much space.I don't want to throw them away,so they will continue to occupy a lot of space.
And I would like to buy many more books. That's quite a dilemma,I'm running out of space to store them, and don't want to dispose off the ones I already have.Hence,my reading has shifted more to e books. But I don't enjoy them as much as I enjoy physical books.
I have around 1,000 physical books. During the last 16 years I have donated another 4 to 5 thousand. I have around 3,000 e-books as well.
On my shelf in front of me,
600/800
on my kindle another 500-700
Although so many never counted exactly

At last count: 6688 (all paper, mostly hard cover editions)Comprising:
4011 mainly film but also theatre, radio & TV, music.
1686 general books incl. history, pop culture, sports, animals,
literary bios, true crime, photo books etc.
991 novels & short fiction.
Plus a few hundred duplicates, etc. to be disposed of to some lucky person!

Just too many good books out there and once I collect one, they are too precious to dispose of.
That's why I live on Poverty Row!
And not easy to resell books or give them away. The market in Australia for second hand books etc. is shrinking - a sign of the times I'm afraid; very few booksellers want to purchase unless it's some sought after rarity.
I want to donate all my books to a library or similar when the time comes but nowadays that is almost impossible to do (unless you give them a cheque for a few thousand $ as well).
Only recently a man was arrested for leaving a few bags of second hand books at a charity shop. The people who run the shop tracked him down via their security cameras and had him charged. Man thought he was doing them a good turn and that's what he got for trying to be nice.
I have thousands of books, no exaggeration. I also have over 1000 ebooks. I don't even want to count my shelved books because that feels wrong, somehow. There are never enough books. For my birthday last year, my husband and children built a Little Library for me that sits in front of our house. When I read a book I know I won't read again I put it in there and that has helped a lot.
That I have currently have between ebooks and physical ~500.I have given away easily 500 hard back and paper backs before I went ebook

Reading is never a problem!!!!!!!
If you are talking physical books, i am down to about 30ish. I stopped getting physical books because they take up loads of space. I have given away at least 750 if not more.I now read primarily ebooks for space reasons and not having to roll over to turn out the light at night...I can just keep on reading. if have around 500. I have been a member of Amazon since 1998 and started buying from them when it was only about books.
I have given so many away that I suspect I am underestimating the 750.
I would be a lost soul when it comes to counting actual physical books... Clueless... I don't like the clutter, so e-book is the best..
My guess would be over 400. I tried counting once but got tired doing so. I have 6 bookshelves full and I need another one very soon. I am out of room. This year I am down by half of last year buying books but they still come in. One can never have to many books. Its like gaining new friends each time you buy one.
Just for me (my husband has as many because he is very slow on finishing books, but loves buying, and then there are the books that my kids have yet to move to their own homes ...) I have 215 books that I haven't read between my kindle and physical paper and hardback books. And my cousin mailed a box of books my way earlier this week. That's what I do — I read books, then send them to my cousin or take them to a library book store or my favorite used book store. That way, I hope that more people have access to the books. And my favorite way of gettin books is either the library (more and more during covid) or from my used book store (I've bought many books I probably wouldn't have considered but I think of it as supporting the business).
Last year,I read a lot of e books. But this year,I have rediscovered my fondness for physical books.Bought 60 already and need to stop.Have lots of unread books and books worth reading again and e books.Plus, all those movies and TV shows to watch.Need several lifetimes to read and watch it all.
Checked by Kindle over 1,000 books on it.
And on my bookshelf about 800 books.
Well I guess enough for my lifetime

I have recently added more books but my last count was 761 books. Am I nuts or what. I was faced with the hard truth. Who is going to take my books when I die? My son says he is going to have a burning party so its official I can't die!! Who are you going to give your books too????????
Right now I am just over 850 hardcover volumes. I do read a lot of paperbacks but I only keep hardcover editions in my personal / permanent library.
We are packing up our house to move cross country. So far I have packed 42 boxes of books and am only about halfway through. I have more than I would have guessed. They look so nice and orderly on the shelves, and so massive piled in my living room and dining room!
The last time I posted on this thread was almost two years ago - at that time I had 3,000 ebooks stuck in the cloud - now I have roughly around 5,000. So I guess I am gaining 1,000 a year or so it seems. lol
I just culled my shelves here on GR, and it looks like it's just over 600. I have a friend I'm about to email and check if she wants some (I parted with a mere 4!)I always like these questions amongst readers :)
I never actually counted them, but at present, I'd estimate about 200 read and another 100 in my 'To Read' pile.
5,000 probably....just culled two hundred and it didn't make a dent : ( Probably I need help but....Luv books! : )
I was going to guess at 100 but then I started counting - it's probably triple that, I gave up counting and a friend has today sent me 3 more books in the post.If I count my Kindle books, I suppose it could be 600. I'd buy more but I don't allow myself to do that until I have read more of the ones I already have and then I can give those away. Well, some special ones I'll hang on to.
A very few, I read over and over again, e.g. my son gave me a book called 'Being a Writer' and I wouldn't part with that for all the tea in China, India, Kenya and the rest of the world. It's worth reading a hundred times - well, that's what I think.
I have about 150 print books most of which are signed. On my Kindle I have over 1000. I'll never be able to read them all, never mind all the new releases of my favorite authors that keep coming out that I just have to read. Some I borrow from the library.
I realize I haven't looked at this thread since I began packing for our move almost two years ago. Turns out I have about 5,000 books. That's not counting the ebooks and audiobook files I own. In my defense, a lot of them are inherited sets, many slipcased, so it's not like I am ever going to get rid of them. I'm sure my children will divvy them up after my demise.
I’ve got about 50 books, physical, and about 75 on the Kindle. When I read a book, I just keep tabs on it here, downloading occasionally to BookBuddy app. I’m hooked on Kindle deals of the day.Libraries really can’t use your books if they are over 5 years old. Possibly for replacing existing, worn copies at best. But otherwise your collection may just not be new enough to garner attention, no matter the condition. And you’d be amazed how many donations come from damp basements… of smokers’ houses.
trying to cull my books but have collected so many that are out of print - considering getting another bookshelf somewhere - probably 500ish - have some stored away
