Sounds like the name of a porno movie.

I thought so too.

What I liked was that, while each was great, they all looked at the story from a different point of view. It's interesting to sit and watch both versions of Postman together.

Sawyer | 24 comments Please no spoilers on Mildred Pierced! I haven't seen it.

I have never seen the real movies either. I have been wanting to see the mini series Mildred Pierce, but I usually favor reading to watching TV. I'll make exceptions for Sherlock and others, but I need to make space for the MP series one of these days.

Definitely no spoilers! I'm not much of a tv watcher either, but I do love to see books I've read and enjoyed come to life on the screen.

message 57: by Marian (new)

Marian I have the book on Mildred Pierce and the movie as well:)No spoilers from me thou. The movie I have has Joan Crawford Im going to say?I have to check that thou.

message 58: by Tom (new)

Tom Mathews | 995 comments If you watch the movie version and the mini-series, as I did, you will have no idea as to how the book ends.

Well, maybe we ought to have a little noir reading group and focus on a different title each month!

Egghead brings to mind a bald scientist wearing glasses and a lab coat. None of those fits my description.

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 87 comments I was thinking that in next Month's nomination process of picking The Postman Always Rings Twice so my goal of getting James M Cain on the group shelf need to be successful. I now am kicking myself for not working harder for Double Indemnity, namely the book only being 100 pages and a good way to pad the reading goal for 2014.

The actual movie with Joan Crawford.

message 72: by Sawyer (last edited Nov 20, 2014 12:56PM) (new)

Sawyer | 24 comments Oh, you people! We are talking about Mildred Pierced, not Mildred Pierce.... There probably AREN'T any spoilers in Mildred Pierced. Such movies have no plot at all, and so there is nothing to spoil.

The discussion about the "real movies" actually raises an interesting point though. It never occurred to me that the movie corruption of the proper endings as depicted in the books is actually an opportunity. I have loved the main four Cain books so much that I have mourned the fact that there aren't any more. Same is true with Hammett and Chandler. Particularly in the old days, authors often had some involvement in the movie renditions of their works. I would be curious to look up which of the Cain, Hammett and Chandler movies the authors themselves worked on (or even wrote the screenplay). Those author reworked movies are an opportunity to see the author presenting a different ending to their story. In a way, it allows the enthusiast (like me) to experience a "new" work from one of the big three.

message 73: by Tom (last edited Nov 20, 2014 01:08PM) (new)

Tom Mathews | 995 comments Chandler actually wrote the screenplay for Double Indemnity and appears in a cameo 16 minutes into the movie.

I recently finished another good noir novel Build My Gallows High - then watched the movie based on the book (Out of the past) and screenwritten by the author. Talk about different!

And the Thin Man series??

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 87 comments I will bring the discussion back to Double Indemnity by adding some interesting facts about the classic. The story first appeared in " Liberty " magazine, in its Feb 1936 Valentine edition.
Not your average love story! http://www.magazineart.org/main.php/v...

The story is based on a New York crime, whose claim to fame is the infamous picture of the Ruth Synder in the electric chair taken by a camera taped to an ankle of a reporter.
I love the way James M, Cain packs so much information in a single sentence or a tightly packed paragraph.

So cool -- thanks!

All right, fellow readers, I have now posted an official Double Indemnity thread for us to use so feel free to post away! Just please keep in mind two very important things:

1) be considerate of the other readers in the discussions, meaning politeness should prevail and

2) please, no spoilers until after December 10, in case people wish to join this little group later in the game.

I enjoyed Atticus and Ron Hansen, and not crime, but his Mariette in Ecstasy.
