sci fi novel where main character is found at the edge of the galaxy by a gestalt ship [s]

Hi,

I read this book about five years ago but I'm sure it is a lot older than that. It was a two or three book series i think and was definitely adult sci-fi.

It began with a damaged recording of the main character being found on the edge of the galaxy by a gestalt ship. The character was recreated by the gestalt ship, but due to the damage of the recording they brought him back as a woman and he underwent a slow sex change throughout the first part of the book.

I think one of the methods to her around the galaxy in the book was called The Line.

The series finished with the main character watching a fast forward view of the milky way and Andromeda galaxies colliding.

I read these books in hospital after undergoing surgery, as i was pretty high on pain killers at the time i would like to read them again sober(ish).
