Hey fellow reading witches,

I noticed there used to be a reading group before, I think I joined perhaps too late to take part, but I think it'd be worth it to try and resurrect it.

Would anyone be up for giving that a try starting next year? I say next year because honestly, it's getting to that time of the year in which a lot of people are too busy with holidays and social life that I don't know anyone will have the time.

We could try and decide on books later the year, but I've three witchy (or witch-adjacent) books in my reading list and this would give me the kick I need to get going with 'em:

"Water Shall Refuse Them", by Lucie McKnight Hardy. A witchy tale set in Wales, which a friend described as "if the eeriest bits of The Wicker-man weren't interrupted by songs."

"Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl", by Andrea Lawlor. Set in the 90s gay scene, Paul is a shashifter who takes the form of a woman at will, "a journey through the deep queer archives of struggle and pleasure".

"Witch", by Rebecca Tamás. A book of eco-feminist poetry, "At turns lyrical, philosophical and obscene [it] evokes the sexual prowess of nature as an organism that swallows and consumes."

Obviously I'm open to recommendations, but I think those three sound quite interesting and align with the group's… uh… "mission statement". I'd also offer myself as a moderator/instigator for the group if there was any interest!

Maja (majahfmn) | 1 comments Sounds good, I'd be up for it! :)

One book I'd really like to read in a group, because it may be challenging is Caliban and the witch by Silvia Federici.
Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation

The bookshelf of this group also has some really good suggestions.
Maybe we should hold a vote once enough people are interested, maybe decide on fiction v. non-fiction first?

I was hoping someone would revive this group, thank you so much!

That book looks really interesting! Perhaps we could try and alternate between fiction and non-fiction? I'll try and figure out later if there's a way to do a poll or the like, so anyone who might be interested can vote :)

a r c h i v o (archivo) Gaby, thank you for the initiative! I'd love to join the reading group next year, too. Maja's suggestion is phenomenal.

Roy Taylor | 1 comments May I propose "The Fifth Season" by NK Jemisin?

message 6: by kat (new)

kat o'd | 1 comments Sounds interesting! I have a couple of books high on my to-read list that I think would maybe fit thematically with this group: The House of the Spirits by Isabel Allende or The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood. I'm also interested in Her Body and Other Parties but it looks like it was chosen previously.

"Water shall refuse them" sounds pretty interesting, I hadn't heard of it before. I'm also interested in the Fifth Season, I have started reading it before and a book group might be just enough pressure to actually finish it.

Love the idea about alternating between fiction and nonfiction! I'm pretty well-wedded to fiction but happy to step out of my comfort zone with company.

Glad to see there’s interest! So as I suggested, I’ll try and post a poll regarding fiction vs non-fiction sometime after Christmas, and then once that decided post another poll for titles.

With any luck we can kick off the reading in January and begin discussion/chat sometime later :)

Megan Pyles | 3 comments I would definitely be in as well! I saw another N.K. Jemisin suggestion but so far (I’m currently reading jt) her short story collection How Long ‘Til Black Future Month has had two very amazing witchy stories in it!

Rachel | 1 comments I would love to do this alternating between fiction and non-fiction!

message 13: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidiemme) I'd be up for some reads too! (Full disclosure, I'm in two other book clubs so sometimes I struggle to read everything).

BTW, I started reading Caliban earlier this year, and I was obsessed... it got a little heavy at the time, but I'm eager to dig back into it. It would be so much better to read in a club, as most of my friends were sick of hearing about it :D

message 14: by Anitra (new)

Anitra Sailor I just joined the group and happy to hear it’s going to be active again!

Sara | 1 comments I would love to be a part of the reading group! I think it would be great.

message 16: by Jules (new)

Jules | 1 comments I would also like to join the reading group. Most of the suggestions are on my reading list already, and I would love to get the necessary kick to get into them :) would this be one book a month, I assume, not one a week?

Hello! I just wanted to let people know the reading group seems to be taking off via Discord, where the chosen book for January/February is Circe by Madeline Miller.

I'm happy to have another discussion going on here for the people who don't use Discord, of course, but perhaps we can stick with Circe to get things going!

message 23: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latasha513) Circe sounds good to me. i think it's been on my TBR since it came out. i prefer to chat on here. i don't have or use discord.

Hi for the discord books we have been using rankit if there is people that are interested in continuing some discussion here I would be more than happy to share some of our links for voting.

Ok thanks. If it’s not too much trouble, that would be great. I like planning my group reads as early as possible.
