ABANDONED. Book about boy who travels through time that starts in a Subway station.

I remember bits and parts of this book. The boy got pushed into a broom closet in a Subway station and left the closet and was in a different era. I remember he went through several ears of time and at one point went to war I believe and also got involved with the mafia. Im pretty sure it's a YA book but I'm not 100%
