Lisarenee | 2046 comments I thought we had a thread for this already, but I couldn't find it. I'm curious, what do you read besides Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance? I read YA, Romance, Fantasy, Chit Lit, Mysteries, and almost anything fiction. I'm curious, what do all of you read?

Veronica (readingonthefly) I like a good science fiction story, everything from military sci fi to space opera. I also enjoy a good historical mystery (the Sebsatian St Cyr series being a particular favorite). Then there's straight fantasy, sword & sorcery, some cozy mysteries and/or chick lit to add some occasional levity.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I read pretty much anything. But lately is seems like things are more romance than anything else.

message 4: by Katharine (new)

Katharine Sadler | 47 comments I read fantasy, and classic literature, and I really like the modern literature that's got a fantastic edge to it like The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern and The Magician King (The Magicians, #2) by Lev Grossman . Lately, though, I've been reading a ton of romance. I never read straight romance before about a year ago and I'm loving it.

Akaria Gale | 17 comments UF/PNR are my first loves, but I also read horror and BDSM themed contemp romance.

message 6: by Karena (last edited Nov 13, 2014 05:22PM) (new)

Karena (karenafagan) I read all over the spectrum if the book hits just right. It depends really on the subject. I like to read about the Renaissance, food, bios about strong ladies, the Tudors, the 20's, books about book lovers/bookstores/etc, and a few others I can't remember right now.

At any given time you probably will find me reading stuff like Hard Choices, Station Eleven, The Midnight Queen, and Sacré Bleu: A Comedy d'Art all at the same time.

message 7: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 1219 comments I read just about anything except horror. I like to mix it up. I might read a Contemporary Romance along with a UF novel. Lately, I have read a lot of YA novels.

message 8: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (last edited Nov 13, 2014 09:38PM) (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I tend to stay in the fantasy / sci-fi genre - so that is steampunk, space opera, sci-fi romance, fantasy romance, traditional fantasy, etc.

Beyond that I like historical romance, spiritual books and cultural sociology or social economics stuff with a little policy mixed in

I don't think I've heard of space opera. What's an example?

Jane S Morrissey (janemorrissey) | 2 comments Every now and then I pick up a short literary work. The last breathtaking story I've read was Ewan McEwan's novella, On Chesil Beach. It only had a couple of scenes in it but the awkward wonders of two not-quite-compatible newlyweds were perfectly encapsulated in every description.

Veronica Rosa (veronicadelrosa) I pretty much stick to PNR and UR. It's rare that I venture out of the genre. I used to be heavily into Forgotten Realms and have quite a collection of their books. I'm hoping to pass them on to my son. :)
But other than that, I like my paranormal and don't have the time to branch into other genres.

message 12: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 147 comments I read mostly PNR, but I also like mysteries as long as they're not too violent/gory (some thrillers) or too twee (some cozies). I also enjoy history NF and my knitting and beading books. I used to read a lot of SF and fantasy. Maybe I should start again.

message 13: by Andrea (new)

Andrea Jackson (paperbackdiva) I'm a big romance fiction fan so I read all subgenres of that. But I'm esoecially fond of paranormal and of historical.

A few that come to mind are
Grimspace (Sirantha Jax, #1) by Ann Aguirre Perdition (Dred Chronicles, #1) by Ann Aguirre , this is sort of a spin off of the Sirantha Jax series, set in the same world with a couple of common characters Fortune's Pawn (Paradox, #1) by Rachel Bach A Soldier's Duty (Theirs Not to Reason Why, #1) by Jean Johnson

Veronica (readingonthefly) Jane wrote: "I don't think I've heard of space opera. What's an example? "

What Darcy said, Jane. Wikipedia defines it as:

"Space opera is a subgenre of science fiction that often emphasizes romantic, often melodramatic adventure, set mainly or entirely in outer space, usually involving conflict between opponents possessing advanced abilities, weapons, and other technology."

For movies, Star Wars is a good example.

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) I'm an eclectic reader and will read almost anything but my mainstay is romance (suspense, historical, paranormal, contemporary) and mysteries and thriller (historical and contemporary).

I'm not really a fan of non-fiction or science fiction, and I've grown out of YA.

message 20: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I read a lot of murder mysteries. I have actually read those for far longer than I've read pnr/UF so I have a bunch of those series that I've been following for years. I've been on a big m/m kick this last year. I like the wide range of stories & I find I like the better than m/f now since all the m/f stories I see seem to be the same plot regurgitated over & over again. I periodically get into the mood for a cozy mystery & I gravitate to the ones that are about cooks, bakers, tea house owners etc as baking & tea stuff are hobbies of mine. Lastly I love cookbooks & food related books.

There's more in the Grimspace universe? *does a happy dance*

message 22: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4734 comments I mostly read PNR/UF.

In my early yrs I read a lot of contemporary romance, but hardly any at all now. Spy novels like James Bond and Smiley's People, before they made the movies. And historical romance.

Never been a big YA reader, just the odd series here or there.

I don't mind the odd BDSM or erotic novel and I love, love, love sci-fi roms, whether space opera or alien abduction.

I love the In Death mystery series and just picked up a whole lot of them secondhand, especially the ones I wasn't finding at my library.

As to non fiction - I've got lots of gardening & house building books, as well as craft & a few cooking books.
