message 164: by Caite (new)

Caite Spence | 7 comments Hello my name is Caite its my nickname because I don't like to be called Caitlin it's usually used when I am in trouble.

I'm from Australia , I'm 17 years old. I didn't learn to read until I was 12 and even now I struggle. I have a condition that effects my reading called dyslexia. I have trouble because this condition makes letters move a lot. My year goal is 12 books so that I can hopefully succeed. I'm relatively new to this and I'm trying to make friends. To curve my introverted side.

My favourite book is the book thief because it was really good . My favourite genre is fantasy. But I like reading lots of things I'm currently reading teardrop by Lauren Kate.

I'm super excited and can't hardly wait to get my goal started and also make some new friends. Thank you for reading this ! It means a lot .

Welcome, Caite! Good for you, sticking with reading even though it's such a struggle. My dad has dyslexia, and I remember as a kid helping him to read, but these days I swear he reads more than I do! So it can get easier. :)

The Book Thief is awesome!

message 166: by Caite (new)

Caite Spence | 7 comments Thank Faye my condition has three different levels and there all pretty bad I hope I get better.
I use see through sheets in various colours to help . Green or blue on a good day . Red on a medium day and purple on the worst of days . Because my family cannot afford classes without the sheets I'd be unable to read. And my eyes have days where they don't work at all because it takes a lot of strength to constantly concentrate to get the letters to stop moving when I don't have my sheets. Mum says they go lazy and I get really tired .

It's extremely hard but I love reading . I love reading because it takes me to another place also with dyslexia its sometimes hard to write or even make proper sentences in speech. I'm coping well and I hope your dad continues to read and get better!

John Frankham (johnfrankham) Caite - I hope you have real fun in Goodreads. I do, and I find new books to read, that I would never have come across otherwise. I see you are from Perth. My wife and I have been there twice, once to see our England cricket team whipped by your team. A lovely city. I envy you. We have relatives in rural Victoria, so have been to Australia eight times, and have three nephews/nieces about your age: they all love books, too. Just as you say, they take you to so many 'places' we would not otherwise see. Good and happy reading. John

Kassandra | -1 comments Welcome to the group Caite! I'm so happy to see you on here and to see how dedicated you are to a passion that we all share. My little sister also has dyslexia and unfortunately, she doesn't have your tenacity so reading isn't something she attempts regularly. I hope you enjoy the group, we have wonderful people hear that will cheer you on through all of your goals! If you need any help with the group, feel free to reach out to any of the mods or the group in general. Happy reading!

Caite Spence | 7 comments Dear john
I actually live further down from Perth in a small town between Perth and Bunbury .
Crickets an awesome game good watching I like it .
Readings hard but I manage, I started my goodreads to meet new friends with similar hobbies like mine .
Everyone is so nice on here it's really lovely!

message 173: by Caite (new)

Caite Spence | 7 comments Dear kassandra
I'm sorry if I missed spelled your name. I feel like I can understand your sister it's really quit hard to pick up a book when you have dyslexia. Because fonts and sizes of text make it hard as hell to read but we learn to manage. Yes I love to read and its a hobby I like getting taken to a new world it's kind of awesome . Tanicty I have never come across that word before I may need to use a dictionary or thesaurus to find similar words so I may add it to my vocabulary of words. Another passion of mine is to write down all the words I don't know and what they mean so I may remember them and use them . Thank you for your sweet comment and thank you for the new word!

message 174: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Caite, I appreciate you giving me some more insight into dyslexia. It is helping me to understand my little sister a bit more. I love your habit of writing down new words, I used to do that in high school too!!!

message 175: by Caite (new)

Caite Spence | 7 comments That's ok kassandra please if you have any questions about dyslexia just send me a comment or message. I'm glad I could help and its a great habit to get into!

Charlotte (feeling_slightly_bookish) Hello!

My name is Charlotte and I'm a Librarian in Oxford.
My favourite book genre is Sci-fi-fantasy/Historical fiction and my favourite book is Cross Stitch by Diana Gabaldon! It is just amazing!
At the moment though I have been reading tons of dystopian novels, most of them involving the end of the world as we know it! Super dark!

I wanted to join a group on Goodreads and this one looks good! :D

I'm Grace and I love to read books from various genres. I've been enjoying a lot of classics lately and that has been challenging me to become a more diverse reader. I recently read Animal Farm by George Orwell, and I thought it was amazing.

Hi, I'm Elizabeth. I'm delighted to have stumbled across this group -- it's exactly what I've been looking for! I'm a teacher, school admininstrator, and homeschooling mom from New Jersey. I read a tremendous amount, but most of it is research for work or homeschooling -- I rarely finish a book, and rarely read for myself. One of my goals this year is to start doing more reading for myself (and to finish more books, but no pressure to finish them if I'm not enjoying them). I love non-fiction of almost every variety, and my fiction tastes run to fantasy (Pratchett, Brust, Shinn, McCaffrey) or rereading beloved authors from my childhood (L'Engle, Alcott, Montgomery).

John Hale (cero490) | 1 comments Hello everyone! I'm John Hale from Vermont in the US. Half the people who know me, it is by my penname/alter ego: cero490. I've been an avid reader since four and I honestly just like anything with a great storyline and ideas. I write about as much as I read, which is quite a bit, haha. The written word is my escape, break, paradise, and so much more. The three most important things to me are bonds, true freedom, and well, the literary world of course!
As far as favorite books go, the list sort of just goes on and on... But here are some:
The House of Night series
The Last Apprentice series
Sherlock Holmes
The Revealers
I Hunt Killers
Gregor the Overlander
Oliver Twist
Confessions of a Murder Suspect
Slated
Ghostgirl
Inkheart
Dante's Inferno
Velocity
A Tale of Two Cities
Skullduggery Pleasant

message 196: by Kylie (new)

Kylie Brown (kyliebug) | 3 comments Hi, y'all! I'm Kylie from Kentucky. I hated reading as a kid, mostly because we were forced to not only read boring books in class, but we had to meet a reading quota each month and I felt forced to read books I did not enjoy.
Once I got to highschool I was in love with books. I spent my breaks and study hall in the library. And our class reading materials were far from boring. My English teacher also helped me spark a love for writing.
I simply cannot pick a favorite book, thats like me picking a favorivte kid, it just isn't possible. But, my favorite genres are paranormal romance, romance, erotica, and YA. A few of my favorite authors are Molly Harper, Patricia Briggs, Nora Roberts.
In my free time, and since I have 2 little boys isn't much time, I work on my writing, right now I am so close to finishing my 1st paranormal romance book. And after my boys are in bed I try to read 5 chapters of whatever book I happen to have, which usually turns into one more chapter until I either finish the book or can barely keep my eyes open.
Now, I am just rambeling on. I'll stop now. I look forward to reading with y'all and all that stuff.

message 199: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 9 comments Hi I'm Sophie from London. I live with my 3 year-old daughter, Niamh, and two cats; Merlin, my Russian Blue mix and Tigger, my ginger ninja.

I've always loved books, even before I was able to read them to myself and am trying to nurture that same love in my daughter which seems to be working as she will currently spend ages reading the Moomin picture books by Tove Jansson!

I like all sorts of different books, but my favourites have to be thriller/horror/ghost stories - something to get the blood pumping when it's dark and spooky. I'm currently reading Haze by Paula Weston and my goal is to read 150 books this year (though for various reasons I've fallen way behind and need to pick up the slack!). I've just turned 28 today and got some books as gifts including Half Wild, The Devil's Detective, The Farm and No Time for Goodbye which I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into!
