Sam (theliteraryhooker) | 1 comments Hi everyone! My name is Sam and I'm new to the group. I'm 24, from Ottawa, Canada, and I live with my husband and our fat cat. I'm just a little bit obsessed with reading challenges, and reading in general! We had to convert our spare room into the reading room because my books were kind of taking over our house (whoops!)

I'll read any genre of book depending on my mood, but I mostly read fiction, usually historical fiction or fantasy bu again, depending on my mood, I'll read whatever sounds good at the time! My favorite book is Jane Eyre, which I had somehow never read until last year.

Welcome, Sam! I'm a big Jane Eyre fan. I first read it in 1964 and have read it 7 or 8 times since.

William Kelly Hello, my name is William and I'm from Philadelphia, PA. Started reading in high school because my favorite place was the library, but when I finally found Ray Bradbury I fell in love with it. Some of my favorite books are:
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
The Thief of Always
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Animal Farm
Foundation
Fahrenheit 451
The Fountainhead
The Giver

message 109: by Laura (new)

Laura (ooksaidthelibrarian) | 3 comments Hello. I am from the UK. I joined this group in order to expand my reading horizons. I tend to go for safe options when choosing books because I get tired/lazy. When I do try something different I really love it and learn to much so I want to set up some reading challenges this year.

message 110: by Debs (new)

Debs (3xmum) Hi I'm really looking forward to trying to understand this group.. boy it's complicated for a newbie but looks great.. can I could reading all the posts as my first book? Seriously is there a simple guide for newbies to how all this works and where to find the current posts as some of them seem to relate to years gone by and previous challenges? As a single mum of three, student of psychology in her final year, volunteer reader listener at school, fundraiser for the Rainbow Trust children's charity, counsellor, driver and so much more I don't have time to sift through all the information on here to get to the ponit. I love reading. Have already read four books this year and looking forward to reading more especially clearing my shelves of the few hundred books I possess let alone the ones on the ereader.. yes I'm a hoarder!.. but really want to try reading new things so this looks perfect. I'm loving the Agatha Raisin books my MC Beaton.. trying to read them all before the end of the year which is no hardship as I love them.So where do I start?

Hi Debs,

First off, this group is rather casual, you can take part as much or as little as you like. There's no pressure to do absolutely everything.

I saw you were over in the 'Helpful Hints' thread, and apologies for it being out of date. As Renee highlighted, we did a rather big overhaul of the group and added a lot of new features, so it seems rather out of date. However, the basics of the group are the same, and the Helpful Hints thread can help you there.

We have 5 group reads, which you can find in this folder. This is essentially a casual discussion of a book we all read in the month. You don't have to take part in these, or if you've read it already you're more than welcome to join in the discussion.

3 of our group reads are linked to our Challenges that we're running this year: Genre, Non-Fiction and World Lit. We focus on a different aspect of these each month, and poeple can discuss them in our monthly threads and read from the specific subject. For example, February consists of Romance/Chick Lit, Sociology/Relationships/Family and literature from the Middle East. Again, you are welcome to join these at your own leisure, and only pick certain months that take your interest. These might help you try find new things to read.

Finally, we have Mini-Challenges, which are member-organised challenges that are just fun little extras to the group. We have our 'official' Bingo Mini-Challenges, but apart from that, they're often smaller. These are completely optional, and you can take part by just posting in the thread. We make new ones each month, of varying sizes, so there will be some new ones up soon!

They're the main areas of the group. Other folders such as 'General' and 'Book Chat' are just leisurely collections that discuss books and everything.

If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to either post here or in the 'Any Questions' thread, where us mods will attempt to get back to you as quickly as possible! :)

Hope you enjoy the group!

Debs (3xmum) Thank you, I'm loving it. My biggest bugbear with myself and reading is that I stick to the same kind of book or authors. I won some of the goodreads giveaways and ended up reading books I wouldn't have dreamt of picking up but loved them so having these mini challenges is going to be great for me. thank you so much for setting this group up and for explaining it to me so clearly. Looking forward to getting to know you all better x

message 124: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy Eldred Hello,

I am Christina and I'm currently living in Southern California.

I work in healthcare.

I love to read from various genres, especially classic lit, memoirs, travel and modern fiction.

My close friends aren't huge readers therefore I am embracing the online community for literary discussion. :)

message 127: by Bella (new)

Bella | 33 comments Hi Everyone,
I'm a stay at home mom- three kids. The oldest just started college and I homeschool the other two. I used to be an elementary school teacher. When I'm not dealing with the kids, the house, the laundry, I write. (It goes without saying that I'm an unpublished writer.) But I'm here as a reader, not a writer. I promise.

My goal is to read 400 books this year; last year I only managed 339. I read just about every genre- except romance and erotica. (Although I will read romance if it's YA, in an interesting setting or time period, etc. So long as it's relatively clean.)

Look forward to meeting everyone and talking about books. I think three of the four BOM are on my TBR list or bookshelves.

message 128: by Kassandra (new)

Kassandra | -1 comments Welcome Bella. Your goal of 400 is amazing - I'm excited to check in and see which books you choose.

message 129: by NzingaMarie (new)

NzingaMarie | 34 comments I'm Lynnie. Currently living in Texas.

I read pretty much every genre, but I'm focusing on really expanding more this year. My goal is to read 100 books this year. (So far I'm 4.5 in so I should probably speed it up.)

I love coming to Goodreads for reviews and recommendations. I haven't had a great discussion about books in a while, so I look forward to being active in the group :-)

message 131: by [deleted user] (new)

Hello everyone my name is Ashlee, I am 22 years old and live in Ohio with my mom, little brother, and her boyfriend. I am currently in a relationship with my high school sweetheart (5 years) and am working full time at a nursing home while doing some freelance writing here and there on the side and am also working on writing a book of my own that I am hoping will one day be published. I am playing with the idea of going to school to earn my degrees in English and Education as I think being a high school English teacher would be a wonderful job; I'd even settle for being an English tutor! Anyway, moving on. I will be using Goodreads to post my reviews as well as Amazon.

Linette (moseleylinette) Hello, I'm Linette Moseley from Idaho, USA.
I read a little bit of everything and like to have some reading goals and structure or else I end up reading nothing at all. Excited to start reading the monthly genre challenge reads and knocking some books off my always growing to-read list!

message 137: by Ingeborg Aure (new)

Ingeborg Aure Hi! I'm Ingeborg from Norway, I love all kinds of books, I've just read Fangirl, loved it so much! I'm a big fan of Harry Potter, The Divergent trilogy, the Hunger games and books like looking for Alaska. My goal for 2015 is 40 books! Which I don't actually think I will be able to do, but I am quite picky when it comes to finding books and if I have to read many, I can't be picky. So that's it.

message 143: by Sandrine (new)

Sandrine | 2 comments Hey everyone! My name is Sandrine and I am from Germany:) I just turned 18 and also just recently joined Goodreads which I definitely don't regret!
A few hours ago I read the "about me"-text of Faye and I have to admit that I had to smile so hard because I am pretty much the same. I have a crazy obsession with classic literature and can't really find modern works who amaze me that much.
Some of my favourite books are:

- As i lay dying - Faulkner
- the picture of dorian gray - wilde
- the castle - Kafka
- the old man and the sea - Hemingway
- the post office - Bukowski

But I am a very open-minded person...so that I will try books from every genre :) nice to be in this group!

Welcome, Gemma!

Feel free to jump into any discussion thread that strikes your fancy and leave a comment. This group isn't as complicated as it looks, I promise! We have 4 monthly group reads that you can join in on if you like, monthly genre challenges where you can read books pertaining to a specific genre or subject and discuss them, mini-challenges which you can pick and choose between, the occasional buddy read where a few members decide to read the same book and set up a thread to discuss it, and of course our own personal challenges where you can set a goal just for yourself and create a thread to keep track of your progress. Everything's optional, so you can join in anywhere. :)
