Michael | 26 comments Hello everyone! My name is Mike, and I teach high school in Los Altos, California. I’ve been a member of Goodreads for a few years now, but had basically used it just to track reading rather than interact with anyone here. So I guess you could say this is my first book group for a reading challenge.

Most of my reading includes fiction, especially mysteries, professional development books on education, history, current events, and the odd zombie lit book. I also subscribe to a number of magazines, and I read on both my Kindle and on paper. Also listen to audio books quite a bit!

Demographics: I’m 45 years old, a husband, a dad, a sports fan, a wine lover, and a moderate Democrat.

Looking forward to meeting many of you and sharing book reflections!

Michael | 26 comments Oh, and my goal in 2018 is to read at least 60 full books!

message 703: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Joy (rebecca_joy) Hi!

My name is Rebecca. I'm from Pennsylvania.

I've joined in groups before, but haven't really been active as much as a watcher from the distance. This was the first group that got my interest enough to actually participate.

A little about me:
-I'm a Kindergarten teacher. I hope to spread my love of literature onto a whole new generation.
-I'm a huge Disney/Harry Potter nerd. I actually had a Harry Potter themed wedding. No shame in my game.
-My favorite genres are: mystery/thriller, young adult, fantasy, and historical fiction.
-I love to travel, so my Kindle keeps me company on long car rides across the United States.

Happy reading all!

Paula Bardell-Hedley (gaiabird) | 195 comments Hello Mike. Great to have you on board. I'm sure you'll make it to 60 books in 2018 - it's amazing how having a fixed goal can strengthen your resolve. I went from reading a total of 32 books in 2016 to 75 this year (and it's not quite over yet)! 😊

message 705: by Paula (new)

Paula Bardell-Hedley (gaiabird) | 195 comments Hello Rebecca. Good to meet you. I love the sound of your Harry Potter themed wedding - that must have been great fun. Did you dress up as characters for the ceremony?

message 706: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Joy (rebecca_joy) No we didn't. We did have a wizard show up though!

message 708: by Susan (new)

Susan (susankschutz) | 4 comments I think I was already here but neglectful of participating. However, I did manage to outdo myself in book-reading for 2017 with 24 read and something like 18 as my goal. I choose long books with mainly history, biographies and true crime as topics. The first book I finished in 2017 was over 1200 pages long. You know I started that one in 2016 for sure.
If I would put down the knitting needles I could read faster then I remember that Mr. Kindle Keyboard will read to me but, those pronunciations can mess me up and make me start laughing. ;-)

message 709: by Sam (new)

Sam (Sassyowlreads) (sassyowlreads) Hello! My name is Sam and pretty excited for this challenge. I also wanted to leave a link here for anyone who is interested in a new group/reading challenge I have created that is perfect for doing with a topics challenge.

https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

I decided to make this group for readers who want to be motivated to focus on reading more PAGES instead of books. Personally, I skipped a lot of the longer books on my shelves this year because I got so caught up in the number of books craze. So I'm looking forward to letting that go and striving to just read as many pages as I can.

Happy Reading!

Gianna (giannamarie652) | 2 comments hi! my name is gianna. i'm from florida and i like fantasy and dystopian novels. i tend to use reading as a form of escape from the not-so-great reality of the world. i've loved books and reading for as long as I can remember and i'm excited to join in on some of the challenges this group offers :)

Hi Gianna, welcome to the group! Same here - the last thing I want to do is read about daily reality, so I'm a big fantasy reader too. The great thing about most of the challenges in this group is that you can tailor them to your own tastes. Have fun!

Asami (thereadingsquid) | 138 comments Hello and Happy New Year!! My name is Asami and I’m from Australia. I mainly read fantasy and adventure novels as well as YA. Daughter of Smoke and Bone Trilogy
The Lunar Chronicles

message 717: by Sol (new)

Sol (solgrimm) Hi! I'm Sol. I'm a student in Norway. I'll give any book handed to be a reading chance, but the genres I gravitate towards the most are (in no particular order) science, politics, horror, fantasy, and sci-fi.

The main challenge I'm setting for myself in 2018 is to do one book a week (including audio books and graphic novels), but maybe I'll cross-challenge myself along the way with some themed or times ones. :)

message 718: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie (The Book Mongers) | 2 comments I’m Bonnie! I’m from Utah and I’m a reader. I’m trying to get through60 books in 2018 and trying to read a good chunk from the books I already own. Some of my favorite books include the Harry Potter series, Gone with the Wind, Jane Eyre, and anything by Agatha Christie.

Happy 2018, everyone.

My name is Michael. I live in Ohio in the USA.

I look forward to learning what you all read, and your opinions of what you read. Japanese literature is my specialty, so if you have questions, feel free to ask.

I'll dive into the yearlong challenge...let's say...35 books for the year.

Cheers!

Auriella (castleonacloud) Hi! My name is Auriella and I live in Washington. I love to read and definitely want to get back to reading a lot this year (I missed my 2017 goal by almost half). We had a lot going on last year, so now that we are settling in I want to keep up the reading this year! Challenges are definitely helpful along with really good recommendations! Here’s to a great reading year in 2018!

message 733: by Raieru (new)

Raieru | 1 comments Hello! I'm Raieru but you can call me Lily. I recently remade my Goodreads account towards the end of last year because I really wanted to take up reading again and making sure I keep track of what I've read so I can make sure I'm making progress. I love the Harry Potter series, the Sherlock Holmes series, The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor series, and basically any kinds of books with great character development and plot-line. I joined this group because I want to accomplish reading 150 books within this year. I might increase the limit if I finish too early. I put up 100 books as a challenge to finish last year but it was towards the end of the year so I only managed to finish halfway. I love reading manga and light novels but I'll only add light novels and books in my reading list. Among my favourite manga is One Piece. Nice to meet you!!

message 739: by Delanie (new)

Delanie | 5 comments Hi! My name is Delanie and although I've been on Goodreads for a couple years, this is my first time joining a group. I've been an avid reader since I was a child, and my favorite genre is the typical "chick lit." I will venture into other genres including historical fiction and mysteries. However, I do not like romance novels. I find them entirely too predictable, and I don't like my books to always have happy endings! I like books that sometimes end with sadness, or they make me think.

message 740: by Rosemarie, Obsessive Reader (new)

Rosemarie | 4507 comments Mod
Welcome to our group, Delanie. We have lots of fun challenges to help you expand to other genres. I like the classics most, but since joining goodreads I have read a much wider variety of books and enjoyed them.

message 743: by Badlydone (new)

Badlydone | 190 comments Hello! I live in North Carolina, USA. My favorite genre is Epic Fantasy and one of my favorite authors is Robin Hobb. I also enjoy reading British Crime, Harry Potter, historical romance, and British Classics.

I have a tendency to read books from these genres all the time, and so would like to participate in the genre challenge to motivate myself to read outside of my comfort zone. Hope to get to know you all this year!

Rosemarie | 4507 comments Mod
Welcome to the group, Badlydone. Our challenges are a fun way to diversify our personal reading.

message 745: by Becky (new)

Becky Hi everyone. I’m Becky and I live in Southampton, UK. I’ve always loved reading books but over the last five years or so have found myself reading more non-fiction (mainly parenting) books and would love to get back into fiction again. I used to be a member of a book group when I was at work and liked the opportunity to read from an author or genre I wouldn’t have chosen myself. So I’m looking forward to taking part in the monthly challenges.

message 746: by Renee, Mistress of the Mini-Challenge (new)

Renee M | 4789 comments Mod
I'd live to hear a recommendation on where to start with Robin Hobb, Badlydone.

message 747: by Rosemarie, Obsessive Reader (new)

Rosemarie | 4507 comments Mod
Welcome, Becky. I used to belong to a book group that dwindled because everybody kept moving away or were too busy.
My daughte told me about goodreads and I hope you are going to enjoy it as much as I do.
Of course, my TBR never seems to get any shorter, no matter how much I read.

Welcome to our group, Lau. I tend to read more than one book at once too.

Suraj Wate (surajwate) | 3 comments Hi. My name is Suraj. I mostly read fiction books along with non-fiction book once in a while. But this year I want to read more non-fiction books.

Hi - totally understand used to read all the time - started attending school full time and was unable to read for pleasure. Decided last semester that I need time for myself. Started reading my pile of books - was a healthy mental break and gave a new attitude to continue to study without feeling stressed
