Anne | 265 comments I thought so too, but you can buy it on Amazon!

Yeah I think the person who sold it to me bought it in good faith from Amazon or another overseas site & I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt. I've looked at her other auctions & they were mostly china with a few children's books.

My publisher is called Important Books- with the copyright symbol! :D

I think we have the same one!

Yes Arrow has published but not available in NZ. I'm assuming they had permission from GH's estate. & this is the same cover as the Arrows but grainy & distorted.

That would make sense! Is yours big too? I was expecting a paperback format, but it has the size of a textbook!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ "Anne wrote: Is yours big too? I was expecting a paperback format, but it has the size of a textbook!

Yes it is. I guess with the growth in self publishing we should have expected to see pirated books as well! :-<

message 58: by Anne (new)

Anne | 265 comments Yes, I agree.... I feel bad that I bought it now :( but at the same time I really want to read it, it looks really good.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ So you haven't read it yet?

I read it years ago & it was the most unintentionally funny book I have ever read!

GH suppressed it for a reason.

message 60: by Anne (new)

Anne | 265 comments No, I haven't gotten to it yet, but I really want to. Now you've made me even more curious!!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ OK I felt I couldn't just let this go, so I have emailed Random House in NZ (Arrow Books are under their publishing umbrella) in case they want to do something about it.

message 62: by Anne (new)

Anne | 265 comments That's a really good idea...let me know what they say if they respond!

message 63: by Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ (last edited Apr 30, 2015 06:54PM) (new)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ OK. I gave the seller a yellow face (good feedback) but I can change it. She probably bought in good faith but I'm not convinced she sold it to me in good faith. :( With TradeMe I can edit the feedback once & I do have her email.)

message 64: by Anne (last edited Apr 30, 2015 08:03PM) (new)

Anne | 265 comments Hmm yeah, she probably should have said something...that's what I would do if I were to sell my copy! I think you should probably tell her that she should have included what kind of book it was in her description.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I'm pretty sure TradeMe doesn't allow pirated anything to be sold. So she wouldn't mention it.

message 66: by Anne (new)

Anne | 265 comments True, but I wouldn't have thought Amazon would, either.

message 67: by MaryC (new)

MaryC Clawsey | 485 comments The Conqueror might be a good group read next fall 2016), when it ill be 950 years sine the Conquest.

On the subject of historic anniversaries, last week saw the 800th of Magna Carta and the bicentennial of Waterloo, and the papers here didn't even acknowledge them in its "Today in History" feature! Members in the UK and the Commonwealth, did those events get any more attention over/down there?

That sounds like a very good idea. The Conqueror was my favourite out of GH's histories.

With Waterloo, the reenactment made the news on TV. Didn't hear anything about The Magna Carta.

I don't listen to radio at all now.

TV & even print/internet news are at a pretty low standard over here now though.

Susan in Perthshire (susanageofaquarius) | 1448 comments They certainly paid plenty of attention to Magna Carta and Waterloo. Loads of programmes and news coverage here in the UK.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ I changed my mind & decided to collect GH's mysteries after all. Found Penhallow at another junk shop for 20 cents! I will try to get it read by the end of the month!

I'm definitely more interested in the romances, but I'd buy a mystery for 20 cents!

I take it you've not read it before? Well, be forewarned that it's not really a mystery. It's in a whole class by itself!

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ Karlyne wrote: "I take it you've not read it before? Well, be forewarned that it's not really a mystery. It's in a whole class by itself!

I've read it a couple of times before - a very long time ago! You are right it's not really a mystery, but it's always grouped that way. I didn't like it but it's one of the GH books I want to give another chance. So far The Foundling & Cousin Kate have paid off - still not a fan of Charity Girl

message 76: by Karlyne (new)

Karlyne Landrum | 3895 comments I know I've read Charity Girl, but the fact that I haven't re-read it says I must not have liked it! Penhallow must have gotten under my skin, because I did read it again. And it's really gotten to be one of my favorites. Are we reading it as a group one of these days?

That's the one. It's (view spoiler)

I find that Belinda is even funnier to me now that I am older.

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I love all the lower-class characters in The Foundling. I was just rereading the passages with Liversedge, Mr. Mimms, and Mr. Shifnal a few days ago (looking for colorful Regency slang that I could plunder for a story), and they are hilarious!

Abigail, I feel the same way about the lower class characters in The Toll-Gate.

I really enjoyed them. They were an enjoyable change.

message 82: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) I should reread The Toll-Gate—haven’t done so in several years.

Apologies if I have already mentioned this, but some of Jeffrey Farnol's books would be a good source of the cant. He was a generation older that GH & I'm sure he was an inspiration to her.

Jeffrey Farnol

message 84: by Abigail (new)

Abigail Bok (regency_reader) Thanks, Carol! I’ll check that out. I have been using the cant dictionaries online, but they’re all organized by the slang word, not by what it means. (Would love to see a reverse dictionary sometime.)

I was looking for some specific insults calling a person’s face ugly. And reading scenes from GH seemed like a delightful way to hunt! I got some great ones out of Treasure Island, too, but since it was written a century after it was set, I couldn’t be sure they were period-accurate.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ The Farnol title I remember is An Amateur Gentleman. I didn't like it much but I wasn't that keen on The Foundling originally either.

It wasn't even in the right room, so I don't know how it waltzed in there. Must have gremlins. I had actually read it a few years ago when I first got the copy, so I probably won't read it for a while, because I did find a couple of other books I'd forgotten about.

But right now I'm almost done with ... The Foundling!
