Yes we were so worried as he was 22 with so little job experience.
How old is your son Kathleen & what is he doing now?
Our son was so much help to us at our house. My husband's back is really sore & our boy pretty much snarled at both of us when we tried to moved anything My husband had to help with my dresser & the bookcase cause of their size.
Getting him organised at his flat was another matter & we had to go back a 2nd time. I ended up doing the vacuuming so that I could warm up!
As cold & miserable as Hamilton was, Thames is pretty cold too! We have woken up to our 5th frost in a row!

Weatherwise, you aren't missing much here, Kirsten. It is at least sunny, but we have had frosts here the last 6 mornings in a row.
My husband's sore back isn't improving, so he is seeing the osteo on Thurs.

Beautiful days in Wanaka so far. Let's hope the rain/snow/wind stays away for horse trek. Finding the house freezing even with 2 fires. Am I getting soft or are Kiwi homes not designed for the cold? (Make the most of Vanuatu K.)
Carol, hubby with bad back is not good, been there, done that and really hope Marty gets the proper treatment and recovers.

He's had problems before, but not for a while. I think we are going to have to pay the carpet layers to pull up the remaining carpet.

Finally we have some much needed rain here in Vancouver, Canada. Now maybe mother nature can assist in fighting those fires.

That sounds like a good job!
All my son's clothes had the same horrible smell as his flat, so we have washed them, with white vinegar in the rinsing water.
How he never got seriously ill in that flat I have no idea. The boy has the constitution of an ox!
Mr Stubborn insisted he could do the carpet. Very little furniture left in the room fortunately. & his back now really sore. I did manage to persuade him to let our carpet layer help him take carpet outside on Thurs.
The mattress was shot so he took it to the dump but a woman grabbed it - said her mattresses were so bad even her dogs won't sleep on the beds! :-0
Remaining room tiny & only the computer & bed left in it.

The carpet layer should be here in half an hour! I may be without interet till he finishes if he says he can work around router, etc.
My husbands back really sore today. He keeps making this sort of grunting/sighing sound which is hard to listen to. He won't help himself by taking any painkillers. :/
For Lesley & any other moderators. Meghan got me to start a thread in feedback about what we would like as moderators & she is definitely receptive to the idea long gone creators of groups shouldn't be able to delete them (that wasn't what happened, but that is what people first thought) I'm hopeful that, at least, will be looked at. https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Yes, I saw that Carol. I was a bit appalled to learn that people who have abandoned for some years groups they have created are able to delete the group at will.

Spike Milligan wrote some great stuff for kids. A.A. Milne of course, Lewis Carol's stuff is great and Edward Lear. Limericks they can make up. Start 'em with silly ones like:
There was a young lady of Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger;
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger.
or
There was a young lady from Hyde
Who ate green apples and died.
The apples fermented inside the lamented
And made cider inside her insides.
Kids are great at limericks!!!
Right, I'm on to it P.D.R. Limericks in the car this morning and R.L. Stevenson from Waste Busters plus an American, James Proimos, from the Library. Next recital takes place this evening after dinner. Drop in temperature expected tomorrow, could be a book and puzzle day. Granny may get some reading done.

I wouldn't count on it!
A few years ago, I was holidaying in Dunedin & wandering through the student part of town. On a number of these appalling wrecks there were signs. I assumed they would say "This Building Condemned" but no, they said something on the lines of "Already rented for next year!"

How have you been fairing down there in the deep South with all the snow P.D.R.? And how's that neighbour?
Ugh predictive text - ETA How have you been faring ...
Looked on your link K. Is Power Talk the new name for Toastmasters or a different organisation?
Seriously, you and I must meet. I once won the Toastmasters' speech contest for the Orange Free State, SA. I was pregnant at the time and could not travel to the U.S. for the finals. Hey, Kath, give me 3 minutes and I can convince you of anything!
Hey Carol,
There are many weirdos putting your name to their books and reviews. Is this a problem on GR or a problem with me as your GR friend?

Haven't heard that. Have you got links?
There is a problem with some reviewers having their reviews pirated but I would think I'm too small a fish for that to happen to me. :)

No. I don't think you are small fish as I follow your input.
Hey Carol, can't contact you as no C A R O L trickers your account.
Well I'm not sure if this is what S.K meant but my review of Waterloo by Bernard Cornwell has been "scraped" by some dodgy site alleging they have free books available to download. Completely copied, right down to my name & avatar.
GR does take this seriously & GR staff member Emily is already on the case.
Here is the GR Feedback thread.

I've sent a screenshot to Support. If you ever see my reviews anywhere but here or Leafmarks they have been nicked.

Hmm, mine too Carol, I have only ever written 16 reviews. It's booklea.com scraping GR reviews of books they are trying to sell :(

And if you have a look at their website you will see they have a Privacy Policy, DMCA Policy and Disclaimer that are rather ironic giving the way they are getting their reviews etc. It was interesting to note that in the FAQs section how the English deteriorates. I recognised a lot of GR regulars there. In fact they are basically lifting the GR book page, reviews and author information including photograph. I would have thought that was a bit borderline and that GR wouldn't like that but...
Mine was http://booksreadonline.website
& my picture is my own - that's one of my bookshelves!
I think GR is taking it seriously, but it's not going to be a quick fix.

I found my review on another scraping site. I've had a response from GR (about the first one) saying they are looking into it.
I was on a St Johns First Aid course yesterday. It's a one day course now, so they pack an awful lot in.

& GR has contacted me again saying they are looking into this, but suggesting I contact the sites concerned or their host. I have no clue how to find out their hosts (which are no doubt in Mongolia or the North Pole) & I can't find a contact us on their pages.
My backside really sore now. Since we all had to play accident victim yesterday - on concrete floors! If I renew mine, I'll take a yoga mat!

I've been busy planning my book launch, and doing general publicity stuff for that. Coast FM are having it as their "Book of the Week" the week of 31 August, which of course is when I will be in England volunteering at the Vindolanda Archeology Dig!

Edit: got sidetracked. St John's first aid courses used to be a bit macho man IMO where they would deliberately show the most gory stuff hoping you would keel over. Not like that now thank heavens!
I fainted last time I gave blood. No one I knew in the hall when I hit the deck & of course when I came to 10 seconds later the hall was full of people I knew. They won't take my blood now because I was in England in the 1980s.
Congrats about Coast FM Kirsten!

& an actionpacked day today. We met our daughter for lunch in Ak City centre. My husband & the car got stuck in the Victoria St Car Park building. By the time he joined us at the Federal St Deli he was just about ready to have an apoplectic fit - not helped by finding he could have had validated parking at Sky City.
We went to Rams at the International Film Festival which was interesting - we were still talking about it on the (long) trip home. Auckland traffic worsening all the time & we are getting more reluctant to go up there.

Getting back to this again, this piece re-iterates the retention issues of ebooks (vs written). They are quoting the same study from before, however I thought it was still not a bad article

In July it was judged a finalist in TWO categories in the First Coast National Excellence in Romance Fiction Awards - Best First Book and Best Novel with Romantic Elements! I didn't win that, I was up against some extremely talented authors!! It has been totally unexpected and I feel so proud!
Yes congratulations Carole.
My kids have been down for the weekend - they helped with what I hope is the final shift of furniture.
& my daughter got the PC working - when she put it back it stopped working again when she put it back in the desk! If she has time she is going to pull the back off when she gets home & see if she can spot a loose wire.
My daughter has taken our car to drive Xave back to Hamilton. The only afternoon bus goes via Tauranga! This would mean it would take near 5 hours for him to get home. (the stops are on the leisurely side)

Been absolutely side tracked with reading pulp fiction by D.J. Molles. Seem to be craving swashbuckling, zombie-ism. Escapism? Also recently discovered Graham Greene. He's brilliant. Love his writing style.

I've just been cross referencing my GR's TBR list, with Amazon, downloading about a dozen ebooks onto my kindle for my trip to England this week. Oddly enough Graham Greene's books popped up as "Based on your purchases these are recommended for you..." thing on Amazon. I didn't buy any of them, but which one would you recommend S.K.?
After days of agonising we have bought a new bed. Will be delivered in 10 days.
Funnily enough, today my husband's back is much better. Maybe all these days of lying on showroom beds!
& a new printer. After a lot of help from some poor guy in The Phillipines, it's now going.

Nothing like a new bed! My partner was having trouble sleeping due to a bad back + bad bed (we sound like we're 60 when we talk about our back problems but we're both fit and in our late 20s/early 30s - just spent top much time sitting at at office desk) so we got a new bed two years ago and it was like a miracle worker! We did get the firmest mattress in store haha. Hope yours is a goodie too.

Let's hope so! Nothing wrong with our old but IMO - it was a spares that need replacing. But our old one will go in spare bedroom, so its a win, win!

Well the exhibition runs till 2018 so hopefully you will get another chance!
I love Wanaka!
The poetry sounds really cute!
Had a good day yesterday. We went to Ak yesterday, so Marty could have a meeting with his brother about their trip to Italy. The 4 of them's lack of organisation has me seriously worried about them from the moment they get off the plane for a stopover in Bangkok! But they have made some progress & now have Bangkok accommodation booked.
& so happy! Our son is working in Ak at the moment ( & being able to type the words "my son is working" feels so good!) so we picked him up from a McDonald's. He had just got word that instead of working Friday they were going to pack up & come back to Ak on Sunday. So he has come home with us & we are going to shift the furniture out of the remaining rooms, then taking him back to Hamilton to move his remaining stuff out of his flat. He is so seldom in Hamilton now that htere is no point paying rent & the kind, wonderful parents of one of his friends have said he can stay there on the rare occasions when he is in The Tron!
He doesn't have much - the flat is a miserable, damp hole so his bed has mould & needs to be dumped, so it's just a chest of drawers, his nutribullet, his weights & some clothes. :)
