Yes warm wishes for your Nan's recovery!

& I decided not to go to Auckland. On Friday night we had hot dogs, made with very cheap & nasty weiners.
I was up most of Friday night with dry horrors & generally feeling unwell. We are assuming there was large amounts of MSG in the weiners. I can cope with small amounts but not large. Fortunately my husband was only very thirsty.
I have to be more careful reading labels.
Edit; so although I was OK by yesterday afternoon, I decided not to go anywhere.

As to the flag fiasco, if Key hadn't tried so hard to control the outcome he might have got what he wanted. The foolishness of voting on the new flag before establishing that one was wanted is beyond belief (and wasted money). A lot of people I know who voted opted to keep the old flag just because they were annoyed at being 'told' what to do and not being allowed to see all the possibilities as P.D.R. spoke of.

Echoing everyone's sentiments, Melissa. Hoping for the best outcome for Nan.

Haven't seen you around for simply ages, Darkpool. Good to know you're still keeping an eye on the group! :)

Pity. You could have taken the opportunity to 'hear' Lady in the Van had you gone to Auckland. Hope you are both feeling better now.

Ditto everything you are saying about the flag fiasco, Deborah. Total waste of time and money for the country.

If I had gone up I would have gone to one of the NZ films. & my husband woke up fine. :)

I think the biggest mistake was not having a flag specialist or at least a graphic designer on the committee.
& good news - my neighbour has a kitten. The picture she put up on FB was of a happy & confident looking kitten - probably Russian Blue.

No, Deborah - you can't have a kitten! You have six cats already!
Um.....perhaps John Key could have set about leaving a real legacy instead of relying on a new flag - some useful legislation, perhaps? For actual New Zealanders....or am I being simply too, too silly?

I'm going to ask when I can go over- Sue has a big circle of friends & I don't want to crowd the little guy,
I know people who voted for the new flag for all sorts of reasons, but the only one who said he loved it was one of my husband's brothers. He's a businessman who wanted a "made in NZ" logo to slap on Kiwi products,

& I forgot - my family had a great night in spite of a dismal performance by the Warriors - & the main course which was chicken with a very small serving of vegetables. All three of them took full advantage of the free Asahi beers & had slight hangovers.

A shame that the team didn't win. However, life sporting events are a lot of fun and I a mglad that your family had a great time despite their team's performance.

Anyone going to see As You Like It - the National Theatre's film?
I might trade meat for a ticket! :)
How do you make smileys work?!
Have to be in Auckland the weekends of Sept 17/18 and November 5/6th. Anyone know someone safe doing couch surfing?

You are such useful people to know when it comes to books out of print.

No that doesn't ring a bell. We are actually a bit low on children's books at the moment -hopefully some will be donated next week.

A hunting I must go.
Lucky me, I have received some pineapple lumps in the mail from a very good friend in Auckland. Apparently this is a very Kiwi experience that I must have.

I read Collective Mind book and wondered one question. According to the book every person can sell creativity from their brain
and ask for that everything they want.. money, house and so on.
But the rest of their life spend like "a vegetable". And it's becoming a popular trend!
Many people live a wealthy life.
So I wonder what will be your choose? Money or creative?

Enjoy them Melissa and come over and buy your own in the dairy!

P.D.R. wrote: "Actually I hate pineapple lumps but they are like chocolate fish, part of the experience. I don't mallowy puff gooey stuff or yellow colouring.

I actually really enjoyed the pineapple lumps ... and I do not usually enjoy fruit in my chocolate. I shall have to go to NZ and get some of those, hehe. I was super excited to get New Zealand mail :)
However, I do not think that I would like chocolate fish. I don't like chocolate covered marshmallows.

What we have is space and empty beaches and high country and building free horizons. And nights when the moon is almost touchable and the stars cluster thicker than sultanas in a spotted dick.
We can breath out here.

Living in Vancouver, we have about 10 Starbucks within walking range of each other. I wish I was joking, However, I prefer exploring out of the big city and up to the North of British Columbia.

I'm not sure where in NZ you are Brittany, but certainly Auckland used to have heaps of Starbucks & still has some. I think some closed - just not that popular here. I always found their coffee a bit gutless - & I don't drink my coffee strong! Generally speaking I prefer "stand alone" cafes rather than chains. Other than Sierra which I think is a NZ chain.
I would have loved A&W when I was younger (love their root beer) but I rarely drink soft drinks now.

I'm four hours south of Auckland, unfortunately. I grew up in the states so I was used to having seasonal lattes and a wide variety of flavours so I hate the little coffee shacks, they are fine in a pinch but I drive forty minutes to get a Starbucks once a week just to have it as a treat... And apparently because the population is so low here they won't stock as many books as they do in the states so I guess Amazon will have to do for now.
I love it here but I miss my old comforts. I'm going on four years since moving here, I wish I could live in Auckland where you can at least do some shopping and places stay open later than 3 pm- lol!

Homesickness can be a funny thing - my mother used to suffer from it terribly. For Mum it was shoe shopping - she was a double A & before she started travelling for business she would get her sister to send shoes over.

But if you are a city person why did you move to the land of the great outdoors? To a country whose total population is only that of a city. To a place where the necessary basics are here but not frills because we do not have the population?
And you do not understand that NZ is part of the British Commonwealth. Our publishing links are all British and Commonwealth. If you want American books you will have to use Amazon or Smashwords.
New Zealand invented the Flat White and we like our coffee to taste this way. It is not American but this is not America. Everything is different including our version of English!
It's hard to adapt but you are making strides. I award you a bag of pineapple lumps for effort!
I forgot to wish everyone a Happy Anzac day ... I don't know if that is the correct way of phrasing it, though. Regardless, I hope the sun was out for all of your celebrations.

Oh dear, Brittany and Reporoa is very rural. How's your baking? There must be a woman's group somewhere near you. They'll be a great source of all the silly stuff you need to know and understand.
How about blogging a piece each day about all the different things you keep finding. If you try to make it jokey you'll soon start seeing the funny side for yourself.

I know that PDR has family over here in Canada so I hope that they are safe and nowhere near the horrific fire that has destroyed several communities (Fort McMurray and Anzac).

One lightning strike, or one idiot and they too could face exactly the same sort of fire. Rainfall has been low and the land is dry. Scary!

Yes, the fire has grown to 1,500 hectares and is supposed to get bigger. It has nearly hit the saskatchewan border.
Such a horrific thing to watch. My heart goes out to Alberta and its families.

My family is all home - they are bonding over rugby *shudder* on TV.
Just what I think is an interesting factoid - my son, at 23, is still growing. He has just been measured at the doctor's & he is 6ft 5in! I'm just off to have a trawl around the internet about this. I used to think people stopped growing at around 19, but he didn't.

Certainly my son sprouted again between 22 and 25 now he's just a big lump!

Girls/women are younger though. Can't find the site I was looking at which says 17/8. However, I remember years ago a Winter Olympic athlete had to get a new uniform as she had a growth spurt at nineteen.
I did find a site which said the same as PDR - 25 for boys/men. My boy looked dismayed. He already sleeps diagonally in his queen size bed.
My husband & I have no idea where in our family trees this came from. My Dad's side - mostly medium height. My mum's & Marty's parents - no one over 6ft 2. & no late growth spurters either.
With the growth stunting factors - no ciggies or steroids. & he only drinks on the weekend.

I've got to the stage where I just think each one of us is an individual and has her/his own individual quirks and tricks. Explains a lot. My research scientist family tell me all cancers are actually unique within their pattern. Certainly my darned arthritis isn't like anyone else's version of the darned disease..
